Warm Up (15 mins)

Organization:

Half the players on the outside of area with balls. Leave two outside players without balls. Half the players inside the area without balls.

Activity:

Players in the middle check to receive the ball. Once they receive the ball, they turn and pass the ball to a player on the outside that does not have a ball. Then check and receive a different ball. Play for 60 seconds and then switch roles.

Variations:

-Different types of turns

-Add defensive pressure and force players to play back in need be.

-Present correct surface

-Quality first touch away from pressure

Small Sided Activity (20 mins)

Organization:

2 vs. 2 +3

Activity:

In a defined area, players will be 2 vs 2 plus one neutral player on the inside and two on the outside. The objective is to keep possesion of the ball by using all available players. If the defending team wins the ball they transistion to the attacking team. Play for three minutes and then switch roles.

Variations:

- Certain amount of consecutive passes equates a point

-Receiving passes from outside players equates a point. One point for receving and playing back. Three points for receving from the outside neutral and passing to the other neutral.

-Touch restrictions

Coaching Points:

-Angle of approach

-Body shape

-Vision

-Relax and withdraw contolling surface just before contact

-Positive first touch into space, away from pressure

-Communication

-Proper passing technique

-Decision making

Expanded Small Side Activity (25 mins)

Organization:

6 vs. 5. Attacking team plays with six (4 midfielders and 2 strikers). Defensive team plays with five (three defenders and two midfielders). Field is narrowed toward the large goal to facilitate less time and space when deciding when to receive and turn or possess.

Activity:

Attacking team trys to score on the large goal. Defending team attacks two small counter goals. Coaching restarts play to keep activity moving.

Variations:

-Adjust numbers to provide the proper amount of pressure and success.

Coaching Points:

-Tactial application to the game (first touch away from pressure and toward support)

-Recognition of when to turn versus when to simply keep the ball

-Supporting shape and balance in possession.

-Speed of play and fast, accurate decision making

10 vs 10 Match. Blue team plays a 3-4-2. Red team plays 4-4-1
