WU - Midfield defending (20 mins)

Setup:

3 lines as shown

Balls at midfield with coach

Activity:

3 players come out to defend central ball as if 3 midfielders.

Coach plays ball into midfield and they adjust to play it back after connecting at least one other midfielder.

Play 3 balls and then rotate.

Players do dynamic movements on the way back.

Coaching Points:

~ Specific communication - "I got ball", "Slide left/right", "Step", "Drop"

~ Providing cover on for every pressure (which turns into support when ball is won)

Intervals:

Setup:

2 teams of 8

2 grids of 25x25 with central grid of 4x4

Activity:

Team in possession scores by getting ball through central scoring zone.

Defense scores by winning ball and dribbling/passing out of grid.

Coaching Points:

~ Pressure MUST play predictable

~ Force play back where it came from

~ Pressure/cover/balance to deny central penetration

~ See one & screen one when covering pressure

Setup:

50x30 grid as shown

2 teams of 5 setup as shown, extra players on endlines as bumpers

3 very small gates for each team to score in

Coaching Points:

~3 D's of pressure -- Delay, Deny, Defend (tackle)

~Specific communication -- "push left/right", "step", "slide", "drop"

~See one, screen one (check shoulder to deny passing lanes)

~Defensive formation is 1-2-2 -- #10 presses when ball is central, #8 or #6 when ball is wide

~Force play backwards or sideways

~Cues of when to step up: Player facing back; Square or backwards pass

~Goal side, ball side when marking

Intervals:

Setup:

2/3 field with scoring zone as shown

Defending team in 1-4-3 (#9 working between goals as option to bounce ball off)

Attacking team in 2-2-3

Activity:

Ball starts in various positions (midfield, free kick, throw in, goal kick, punt from GK) and attacking scores in big goal (3 points).

Defending team scores in counter goals (1 point if score on quick counter; 3 points if ball touches all 3 vertical zones)

Coaching Points:

~#4/5 aggressively keeping field compact by pushing offside line up when possible (when ball goes up, we go up)

~#4/5 reading cues of when to drop and cover space in behind (player on ball has time and space and eyes come up)

~ #6/8 screening the center channels - "See one and screen one"

~#8/10 reading cues of when to intercept vs. delay
