Description

For the majority of our ST sessions we have focussed on individual ball manipulation and ball mastery and nearing the end of Term 1, I would like to continue to slowly introduce 'player cooperation' between 2 players while still utilizing the changing directions and movements and feints we have focussed on during these past weeks in ST. Today's session and theme idea stems from the "Guus-Hiddink-Drill". Guus-Hiddink (if you're not familiar) was a Dutch footballer and now Football Manager who has had a high-profile career and has done quite well for himself. I've added a video link to an exercise he has used, though we will very likely not get to that level with these players, we can slowly build it up using some of the patterns and then adding in our own flare.

Receiving, Turn & Pass (30 mins)

Players should juggle to start

- Freestyle (5 minutes)

- Functional (5 minutes)

Passing & Receiving in groups of 4

To start, have players pass back & forth with the player on their starting side

- inside left and inside right

- encourage active movement while waiting for the ball

If players are successfully passing to their team mate, with the proper technique, move on to ask players to pass with different parts of the feet (you may ask specific groups individually if the entire group is unable to pass with proper technique)

- encourage good habits when passing the ball (i.e. body shape, supporting leg, firm and locked ankle, open hips, follow-through, etc.)

Progression:

Turn with outside or inside part of the feet around the outside of the body to left or right then, pass to opposite side

Turn with inside part of feet through the body to left or right side then, pass to opposite side

Receive with right foot to open up body and switch the play with opposite foot (alternate)

Receive and dribble around the player in the middle then pass to opposite side

Be creative in what you ask of these players within this group of 4 passing

Receiving, Turn & Pass (30 mins)

Black line = Pass

Red = Dribble

To start (specifically for the first group of players) if you would like to get them passing in a triangle, you can apply all the same principles with more basic demands (player cooperation as a group of 3 vs. 6)

All inside foot work to receive and to pass

Progress to outside receive to setup pass and inside foot pass

Progress to spin turns to pass

Use cone to represent defenders, have players move around the cone to receive and pass
