Drill (15 mins)

What: Defending midfield overloads with two central midfielders

35X35 yards depending on players/pitch/weather.

Explain functional practice with tactics board-Opportunity to zoom in and work with key individuals in order to define and establish a clear role within the team organisation.

Conditions: Central area set up with pitch geography in mind

Challenges: Midfield two to defend a midfield overload with a number 10, stopping the pass into the number 9.The idea is to send midfield into wide areas (as in an 11 v 11 playing a 4-4-2 we could double up defensively with our winger tucking in) Depending on the ability of defensive midfielders maybe talk about what to do with the ball once won (transition from defence to attack playing into the defensive teams wide men)

Why: To stop attacking team playing through the middle of us. To send opposition into wide areas.

Key points:

Pressure on the ball

When-On the travel of the ball to press with intensity. How-Low body shape, sending the opposition into wide areas. Cutting off pass to number 9.

Where-cut off lines to number 9.

Who-midfield 3 and number 9.
