Passing Practice (10 mins)

Session Objective

If we can't attack centrally, can we quickly get the ball wide for crosses into the box to create goal scoring opportunities

Set Up

Create a field 40x40 with a 3 metre wide zone on either side and a halfway line. Try to ensure wide players (#7,11,2,5) occupy wide areas

How to Play

Each team aims to transfer their ball from one half to the other but this can only be done through a wide zone.

Set up with a midfield 3 and wide players in own half and #9 in other half. Once ball is transferred to opposite GK start the play the other way - #6 and #9 will swap roles depending on wheta side the ball is.

Play starts from the Neutral player who plays into one of the midfielders.

Wide players start in the same half and have to dribble over half way or run on to a through ball and finish with a cross for ST or MF to play in to GK/Neutral player.

Progressions

- can we have an over or under lapping player

- play directly into other half for first time ball to wide player

Positional Game (15 mins)

Set Up

Create two pitches 15 x 20m with a halfway line and a mini goal at each end. Use cones to create two gates on the halfway line. Play 4 v 2.

Place extra balls around the area.

How to Play

- The team of 4 score by transfering the ball from one half to the other through a gate. The team of 3 score in the mini goal in the half in which they won possession.

- Both teams of 4 must have one player in the opposite half to the ball at all times.

- Blue 3 points for getting player or ball through one of the wide gates

- Blue 1 point for playing through central gate

- Red 3 points for winning ball and scoring in nearest goal

Progressions

Remove the line between the grids and play 8 v 4.

Player Tasks

- If you can't hurt them wide can you switch play quickly?

- Can you overlap or underlap the player in possession or support behind the ball?

- If you can't dribble past your opponent can you drive or pass inside?

- Can you pass through the gate into your team mates path?

Game Training (25 mins)

Set Up

How to Play

The game starts from the GK/coach who passes to Blue who try to score a regular goal. Red score by passing into one of the goals or playing to neutral and getting the ball back.

Team task

Today is all about hurting them out wide if we can't hurt them through the middle!

Player Tasks

#9

- Can you stay high and central to create space out wide and to be in the box when ball gets delivered?

- Can you arrive at the front post as ball is delivered?

#7/11

- If on ball side, be in a position where you can receive the ball to wide to feet or between the CB and FB for through ball

- If the ball is on the opposite side, can you be a second ST (generally a late run towards back post)

- Can you receive the ball facing forward? If you can't play centrally, can you quickly play wide for WF or FB??

- Can you arrive around the penalty spot as ball is delivered?

#8

- Can you support from behind inside if there is no opportunity to cross?

- Can you arrive on the edge of the box to collect any second ball when ball is delivered?

#2/5

- If you see the WF tucked in and the ball central, can you exploit the space on the outside with an over-lapping run?

- If WF on the ball, can you support behind or in front?

- One can go, one must stay.
