Main Theme (15 mins)

Technique based practice that focuses on receiving skills and off the ball movement. The practice develops into a high intensity, possession based game.

Organization

- Three evenly numbered groups, each of which have a ball.

- The ball is transferred between players of the same colour.

- Players are encouraged to break lines between players of the two other teams in order to receive.

Coaching Points/Developing the Practice

- Players are initially asked to receive the ball on the half turn (back foot) before playing a crisp pass to a team mate that allows them to do the same.

- Develop the practice through tasking the players with a variety of receiving skills - e.g. safe side control or touches round the corner that in a game would allow them to escape their marker.

- Further progress the practice by encouraging longer passes between players that must be set to a team mate on the move. This can instigate discussions on angles/distances of support and third man runners.

*Work in high intensity bursts of 2-3 minutes.

Main Theme #2 (20 mins)

Organization

- Continuing the three team practice, this time working for blocks of two minutes at a time.

- Two groups aim to keep the ball between them while one group defends and is tasked with winning the ball.

- Teams score points through regains; each time they win the ball back in the two minute period they gain a point.

- Alternate the defending team, making the practice competitive through the point scoring system.

Managing the Practice

- Encourage a high intensity pressing game from the defending side.

Coaching Points (Among Others - depending on group ability))

- Coach the groups aiming to keep possession to recognise the neccessity to instigate changes in tempo in their passing. Are they able to use shorter passes to draw in the defending side before effectively breaking out of tight areas using longer, pacier passes.

- How can players create passing lines for their team mates through their movement? Can they drive from an outside position to an inside position in order to create a pass?
