Warm Up (15 mins)

Organization:

1.30 x 30 yard area with 8 cones scattered set up as shown

2.12 players (10 attackers, 2 defenders) set up as shown

3.10 balls

Instructions:

1.The defenders have to tag the attackers

2.The attackers are safe as long as they are on a cone

3.If another attacker moves to the cone, the attacker already there has to leave

4.Attackers can only be caught when in open area

5.If a defender tags the attacker, they switch roles

Coaching Points:

1.Head up and observe surroundings

2.Close control of the ball.

3.Awareness of other players moving into your space

Progressions:

Remove 1 cone to give less hiding spaces.

Main Theme (20 mins)

Organization:

1.30 x 15 yard area set up as shown

2.12 players (2 Teams of 6)

3.3 players from each team situated on diagonally opposite markers set up as shown

4.Supply of balls at half way line with coach

Instructions:

1.Coach plays ball into feet of attacking player A

2.Player A must dribble ball over half way line

3.On player A’s first touch, the defender on his side may chase him, attempting to tag him before the line

4.After crossing the line, player A is safe, and passes the ball to feet of his teammate B

5.Player A and the chasing defender rejoin their team on opposite sides

6.Player B repeats in opposite direction, with the defender chasing on his first touch

7.Roles change when the attacking player is tagged before the half way line

Coaching Points:

1.Positive first touch out of the feet

2.Select the appropriate controlling surface

3.Fewest number of touches to cover the distance quickly

4.Run in a straight line

5.Execution of final action

Progressions:

Defending player can move to chase attacker as soon as his team mate passes the ball

Defending player can move to chase attacker as soon as his team mate crosses the half way line

Field is widened to increase starting distance between attacker and chasing defender                                                                                                  

Defender must wait for attacker’s second touch before chasing to tag them

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

1.30 x 20 yard area set up as shown

2.12 players (3 teams of 4, 1 team resting) set up as shown

3.2 yard deep target area, at each end of field

4.Supply of balls by coach at side of area

Instructions:

1.Teams play 4 v 4, to target zones

2.If player can dribble into target zone, they win the game, and must leave the ball in the zone

3.Losing team immediately comes off, with resting team allowed to start instantly with ball that has been left in target area

4.Team who previously won must all retreat and touch cone in own target area before attempting to defend

5.Teams do not need to wait for other team to be ready, and can attack on transition immediately

6.If ball goes out, coach restarts by serving to player with most space in front of them

Coaching Points:

1.Positive first touch out of the feet

2.Select the appropriate controlling surface

3.Head up and observe situation

4.Head down when playing the ball to ensure good contact

5.Play with the laces of the foot closet to the ball

6.Fewest number of touches to cover the distance quickly

Progressions:

Corner markers can be moved to near end of safe zone, thus reducing the distance players must retreat on transition

Team must score three points to win, thus allowing conceding team to remain on field, and transition quicker

Screen 4 (30 mins)

Session Organisation

Half pitch with goals at each end, as illustrated.

18 players (incl. 2GK’s) organised 9v9, supply of balls by goal with GK.

Practice starts with: GK rolling ball to either FB for attacking team.

FB is limited to 2 touches & must play ball into MF.

Central MF players for Defending team look to screen the defence.

• If D’s gain possession: they try to build quick attack

& have 10 seconds to achieve a strike at goal.

• Objective of practice is: A’s look for opportunities to build attacks

& penetrate opposition with inventive individual, combination &

direct play.

• Once attack &/or counter-attack has concluded: practice restarts

from GK again.

Detail

Quality & timing of A’s passing & movement.

• Receiving, screening & turning skills in MF & attacking areas.

• Effective ball retention in all areas & precise passing execution.

• Individual creativity in 1v1 situations, looking for goal

scoring opportunities.

• Depth of D’s back line & position of screening player.

• D’s marking & covering positions.

• Speed & precision of counter-attack by D’s, breaking from back

& MF areas.

• Concentration of A’s defenders to safeguard against

possible counter-attack.

• Simple progression for this practice is:

- Introduce 4 additional players & play 11v11 on a full-size pitch.
