Rondo- Counting (10 mins)

Organization:

1. Two teams of six players.

2. Extra balls around the outside.

3. Two 10x10 yard boxes.

4. Two minute rounds.

Instructions:

1. Each team sends two players to the opposite box to defend.

2. Starting at 3, players try to link 3 passes in a row. Once complete the start at 0 and try to link 4 passes in a row, etc. (1-2-3-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-5)

3. If a defender gets a touch they start at 0 trying to link the highest number of passes they were on. (e.g. If a team completed 3, 4, 5 passes in a row and are trying to link 6 but a defender gets a touch, they start at 0 but are still trying to get 6.)

4. After each two minute round ends check what number each team is on, switch defenders and contiune to round two. Each team starts round two at whichever number round one fishished on.

5. Winner is the team that passed to the highest number.

Coaching Points:

1. Angles of support. Should be two players supporting wide while the third supporting player is looking for the split.

2. Play with head up to see options and where the pressure is coming from.

3. Can you draw the pressure in and then get out and swith the play.

4. Quality of the pass- weight and direction (which foot do you pass to to set up the next pass, how strong is the pass to set up the next pass)

5. When to play one touch when to play two touch- one touch when pressure is tight. Two touch when pressure is far and you want to draw them in with first touch and then play out with second touch.

Progressions:

1. Limit touches- one or two touch. (typically with space and two defenders players only have time for one or two touch so restriction is ussually not nescesary.

2. Make area smaller. 8x8yrds.

Technical Reps (10 mins)

Organization:

1. 20x10 yard channel.

2. One channel per four players. Half on each side.

3. One ball per pair.

4. Four cones in the middle in a diamond representing defender's tackling radius.

Instructions:

Phase One: Messi/ Inside Outside

1. Inside outside touches to the middle. U-turn, pass to next player.

-Dynamic movement to the end.

a. high knees

b. butt kicks

c. backpedal

d. defensive shuffle.

Jog to the back of the opposite line.

2. Right foot for 90 seconds. Left foot for 90 seconds.

Phase Two: Scissors

1. Both sides go at the same time. Eye contact.

2. Left foot scissors, rigth foot touch outside, breaking the half way line.

3. Once passed the defender(half), dribble behinde and close the door.

4. Leave the ball for the next player in line (takeover).

5. Two minutes change directions. (left foot scissors)

Coaching Points:

Inside outside

1. Ball should be moving diagonally forward each touch, not straight.

2. Can U-turn roll in the direction you're passing.

3. Pass to teamates correct foot.

4. Bend the knees on the backpedal. Short quick steps.

Scissors

1. Foot steps around the front of the ball to fake a touch in that direction.

2. Use shoulders and eyes to desguise the fake step.

3. Take the ball away with the opposite outside of the foot.

4. Angle of touch diagonally behind defender.

5. Close the door once past the defender.

Progressions:

1. Double scissor.

1v1 Attacking (10 mins)

Organization:

1. Two defenders next to goal, two attackers across area.

2. One goal.

Instructions:

1. Defender passes out to attacker. Attacker tries to beat defender using move practiced in technical portion of practice.

2. Once defender is beat can you close the door and score.

3. Switch lines after each turn.

Coaching Points:

1. Bait the defender with a bigger touch then cut them back and score.

2. Once defender is beat can you close the door by dribbling across them.

3. As soon as you create the space to shoot can you take the shot even if it's on the weaker foot.

4. Scissor- step around the ball and plan hard to fake the touch in that didrection. Take the ball away with the opposite foot.

Progression:

1. Double scissor.

2v2- Recovering defender (15 mins)

Organization:

1. Two teams

2. Two goals

3. One end zone

4. Supply of balls at halfway line

Instructions:

1. Player dribbles to end zone and stops the ball. Upon conceding possession the player sprints around goal before transitioning to defense by supporting 1st defender who has joined the play to protect the goal. The two attackers attempt to to score in opposition goal in a 2v1 scenario before the retreating defender can create a potential 2v2. One point for a goal scored as the attacking team and two points for the team with the retreating defender (i.e. transition to defend, win ball and score in counter goal). All goals must be scored in oppostion half.

Coaching Points:

Retreating Defender:

1. Mentality

2. Quick reactions

3. Cut off direct route to goal / shooting lane

4. Take shortest possible distance

5. Sprint in straight line

6. Apply immediate pressure

1st Defender:

1. Delay opposition attack - until 2v2

2. Cut off direct route to goal / shooting lane

Progressions:

1. Adjust position of end zone

3v3 (15 mins)

Organization & Instructions:

1. Play 3v3 with puggs in a 30x25 yard area.

Coaching Points:

1. Play with head up.

2. Messi touch when space is tight.

3. Can you use the scissor, double scissor to beat defender and score.
