Warm-up (20 mins)

Organization:

Players work in pairs, one ball per pair. Orange cones 8 yds apart.

Instructions:

Players will perform a ball handling skill out to the cone, turn, make eye contact, pass to their partner then follow their pass to get back in line. Start with simple skills then increase difficulty.

-rolls

-pullback-hop-taps (i.e. the stop-start move)

Coaching Points:

Head up.

Touch every step.

Progressions

- Race, first team to go back and forth ten times wins.

- Finish with a game of knockout (aka king of the hill) or sharks and minnows.

Technical mastery (20 mins)

Organization:

Two cones 4 yds apart with a flat disc in the middle to mark out a straight line. Two players on either side of the line, players will not cross the line.

Instructions:

Round 1: Neither player has a ball. One player is attacker, defender shadows from other side of line. Attacker has to beat defender to either cone, attacker receives a point if he gets there first. Play for one minute then switch roles.

Round 2: Both players have a ball. At their own speed, each player practices V-move or inside-cut back and forth at the cones. Gradually increase speed. See how many can be done in one minute.

Round 3: Same as Round 1 but now attacker has a ball. Attacker has to beat defender to either cone, attacker receives a point if he gets there first. Play for one minute then switch roles.

Fully Opposed (20 mins)

Organization:

Two 10 x 15 yard areas as shown. Two teams of 5 players, give them each a number 1-5. Each player has a ball.

Description:

The game is called American Gladiators. Coach calls a number 1-5 to designate the Gladiator, that player kicks his ball aside and enters the other team's area and tries to knock all of other team's balls out of the area. The team who lasts the longest wins that round (= 1 point). First team to X points wins.

Coaching Points:

Protect the ball

Awareness of space

Quick changes of direction to keep defenders moving and unbalanced

Progression:

P - When a player loses his ball he stays in the area and can support teammates by receiving passes. This takes the game from individual to team possession. Coaching points:

- When to pass and when to keep the ball

- Spread out and make the area the defenders have to cover large

Conditioned Game (30 mins)

Organization:

4 v 4 +2 game

Description:

Two neutrals will allow players to build confidence with the ball at their feet as there will not be as much defensive pressure.

Coaching Points:

Patience on the ball

Head up / awareness

Find the space or find an open teammate

Progressions:

Remove neutrals after 10 minutes for even teams.
