Specialized Training is a program designed for boys and girls born in 2004, 2003, and 2002. The program is designed to infuse players with creativity in the game through developing the technique and skill that gives players the confidence and comfort on the ball to manipulate it in match situations that require quick decision-making and the skill to carry out those decisions.

1 v 1 Moves When Being Closed DOwn (20 mins)

Set Up:

Players are in a group of 3 or 4, in 2 lines across from each other. Line with 2 players begins with the ball.

How it Works:

Player passes across to other player and runs as a passive defender (as realisitic as possible) towards their pass and the receiver performs a move then passes to the next player in line and the same sequence occurs again. In the picture, the player is performing a V. The defender needs to close down the attacker quickly since the moves are used in high pressure situations.

Moves:

V: Ball is in front of left foot, Player pulls ball with toes of right foot underneath/inside, Takes touch out with right inside of foot and goes with ball

The Touch Around: Commit the defender while touch step dribbling, Touch the ball around defender on dribbling foot side, Run around the other side of defender to retrieve ball

Fake Pass: Open hips to one side like you are making a pass while ensuring the ball is in the middle of your body, Take ball with inside of foot the other way

Lift: From a standing position, As defender approaches, lift with outside pinky toe part over leg of defender, Accelerate

Fake Chop: Open body up to one side, look to that same side, then chop ball across and take it away

L: Player pretends that they are going to kick ball with right foot, Right foot toes pull ball back and hit behind support leg making an L shape, Attacker goes with ball immediately after hitting ball

Keys:

1. Timing of when to do move. Distance and which side to do move on (based on defender approach).

2. Selling moves with hips (when appropriate).

Passing and Movement 2 v 1 (20 mins)

Set Up:

15 x 10 grid. One ball between 2 players.

How it Works:

Players will practice passing movements against passive coach in middle of grid dribble over the line with control.

A. Pass and Overlap (picture)

Player passes into partner then makes overlap run. Receiver comes inside to create space for overlap. Coach will give receiver either option of making pass or faking pass to do dribble. The dribble should be one of the moves practiced.

B. Pass and Diagonal Run

Player passes into partner then makes diagonal run behind defender. Coach will give receiver either option of making pass or faking pass to do dribble. The dribble should be one of the moves practiced.

Progression:

Add a live defender. One attacker becomes new defender each round. The attackers are trying to stop ball on line to score. If the attack takes too long or goes backward then the round is over (especially for white/blue players).

Keys:

1. Finish your run (don't stop half way)

2. Key eye on ball and defender

3. Change of pace on movement and dribble

4. Sell your pass with good fakes when taking the dribble

5. Look to pass after the dribble.

Passing and Movement 2 v 2 (25 mins)

Set Up:

15 x 10 grid. One ball between 2 players.

How it Works:

Players will now try their movement against 2 defenders. Defenders can steal ball only by intercepting it. Attackers are trying to stop ball on line. Players will try the same movements as 2 v 1s with an added movement:

Players look to make a forward run but defender tracks them so they drop back on angle to receive.

Very important for players to have patience and creativity for success in 2 v 2 but go forward when obtaining a 2 v 1 situation.

Progression:

King's Court. 2 v 2 in a 2 minute game. Team that wins stays on. If teams are tied then coach decides.

Keys:

1. Finish your run (don't stop half way)

2. Key eye on ball and defender

3. Change of pace on movement and dribble

4. Sell your pass with good fakes when taking the dribble

5. Look to pass after the dribble.

6. Patience and Creativity.

7. If about to start movement but defender has already dropped THEN ok to come back to ball and not finish run.
