This coaching session gives players lots of opportunities to move with the ball, take on opponents and test out their dribbling skills. In this small-sided game players are forced to be brave on the ball and make intelligent decisions about when to move forward.

Dribbling Warm-Up (15 mins)

Organization:

-See diagram for set-up

-Area approx. 10x10 yards (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

-Set-up a small square

-Place tall cones around the perimeter, a few paces outside the area

-Give each player a ball

-Ask players to warm-up by dribbling around the area

-On the coach’s call, players run with the ball past one of the cones on the outside. Then players perform a turn (shielding the ball from the cone) and dribble back into the area

Progressions/Variations:

-Encourage players to identify gaps, and break for an empty tall cone whenever they can

-Encourage players to try creative turns

-Add a couple of defenders on the outside of the square to add pressure. Now dribblers have to identify when to attack and when to hold back. This also encourages players to protect the ball when turning

Coaching Points:

-Spatial Awareness

-Changes of speed, direction, level

-Use of different moves/turns

1v1/2v1/2v2 (20 mins)

Organization:

-See diagram for set-up

-Area approx. 12x18 yards (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

-Set-up a small square. Place two small goals on each end-line.

-Split group into two teams. Teams start behind opposite end-lines.

-Play 1v1. The attacking player tries to score in either of their opponent’s goals. Attackers have to be in their opponent’s half for their goal to count.

-If the defender wins the ball they can counter-attack and score in their opponent’s goals.

-If the ball goes out of play, or a goal is scored, the next player at that end of the field starts a new attack against a new defender from the opposite end.

Progressions/Variations:

-Add recovering defending who create 2v1/2v2 once they run around opposite net

Coaching Points:

-Exploit space with big touch/Use smaller touch when closer to defender

-Use a change of speed/direction or move to beat defender

-Decide when to dribble or pass to supporting player
