Passing Practice (10 mins)

Football Problem -

When we lose the ball in the opposition half, we struggle to regain possession quickly.

Session Objectives -

To teach the team how to press with high tempo so we can win the ball back quickly in the opposition half.

What -

Transition to defend by pressing the ball.

Where -

In the oppositions defensive third

Who -

Our #9,7,11,10,8,6.

When -

As soon as we lose the ball.

Why -

So we can counter attack.

Set Up

Create a playing area of 35x20 metres.

How to Play

Play always begins with a switch across the 20 metre line. Ball is played in to middle players who play a 1-2 and play out of the opposite side.

FIFA 11+ exercises while waiting.

Progressions

If you can win the ball from middle pair - they owe 5 press-ups which accumulate!

Positional Game (20 mins)

Set Up

Create a field as shown in diagram above.

How to Play

Reds and blacks play possession but are only allowed in their own area. Score by passing through the middle area to other attacking team.

Blue (defending) can commit as many or as few players into the area where the ball is with the aim of winning and scoring in one of the two mini goals. At the same time they need to prevent ball being played through to the other attacking team.

Team must play at least two passes when in possession before playing through middle.

Team who lose ball become defenders. First team to 10 pts wins.

Points:

When attacking

1 pt for a successful pass through the middle to other team

1 pt for 6 passes in a row

When defending

1 pt for intercepting and completing 1 pass

1 pt for intercepting and scoring

2 pts for intercepting, making at least 1 pass and scoring

Proressions

Player Tasks

- Can you pressure the ball quickly?

- Can you support defending player whilst cutting out gaps for a through ball?

- Can you support defending player so that if the ball is played to a team-mate, you can intercept or get there very quickly?

- Can you position youself so you can prevent through balls and balls over the top?

- Can you look for opporunities to double team? On bad pass, bad touch, facing away from players.

Game Training (25 mins)

Set Up

Use half of a field with "no go" zones on halfway line and three goals that replicate 7,11,9.

Us - 4,6,8,10,7,11,9

Opposition - 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10

How to play

Normal football rules apply except no corner kicks.

Play always begins with Red #4.

Reds are on two touch until the opposition touch the ball - no restrictions after this.

Reds score in the big goal.

Blue score in one of three goals - blue have 10 seconds to score.

Points:

Blue

1 pt for dribbling over halfway (within boundries)

2pts for goal on half way line

Red

1pt for winning the ball back within 5 seconds

2 points for a goal

Player tasks

#7 & #11 Can you apply immediate pressure to the opposition player in possession while preventing a pass to your direct opponent.

Can you provide support to #9 when the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch.

#9 Can you apply immediate pressure to the player in possession while preventing the pass to oppposition #3 or #4.

#10 Can you apply immediate pressure to the player in possession.

#6 & 8 Can you prevent the pass to the target player (goal on halfway) when the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch.

Can you be in a position to prevent a pass to your direct opponent.

training Game 2 (20 mins)

Set Up

Bring in field by 6 metres on either side and place a goal on the half way line.

How to Play

Both teams play a 1-3-3-1 formation using positions in diagram above. Normal football rules apply except corners - ball starts with GK of team who won the corner.

Positional Game 2 (20 mins)

SET UP

Create an area of 25 x 30m with 2 gates at one end and a box at the other.

The team attacking the gates have 3 players and the other team have 4.

The offside rule is used.

HOW TO PLAY

The yellow team are only allowed a maximum of 2 touches until the blues have won possession after which both teams have unlimited touches.

The yellows score a point by winning back possession within 3 blue passes and then get a further 3 points by getting a player in possession in the end zone.

The blues score 3 points by passing through either gate.

The game always starts from 6 who cannot enter the area until a blue has touched the ball.

PROGRESSION

Yellows have only 3 passes in which to score.

PLAYER TASKS

#6 Can you cover both gates when out of possession.

#9, 10 & 11 Can you provide immediate aggressive pressure to the player in possession whilst cutting off their pass to a teammate
