Warm-Up: Sharks n' Minnows (5 mins)

Description

Players start at one side of the field and must dribble to the opposite side without their ball being stolen. You can increase success by making the Sharks also have to dribble a ball while they attempt to stop the Minnows from crossing.

Coaching Points

Controlled dribbling: Slow and steady until there is pressure, then use a bigger touch diagonally forward.

Activity 1: Technical Box (10 mins)

Description

Players are asked to dribble into and around the space using different techniques:

Right foot only, Left foot only, Laces only, Inside only, Outside only, Sole only.

Every 30 seconds have the players perform 10 toe-taps or 10 foundations.

Introduce a move: 'The Scissor'. Continue dribbling, every 5 touches they then must perform the move.

Coaching Points

Technique is the most important thing, touches must be high quality and quantity.

Toe pointing to the ground when dribbling with laces. It's more of a push than a kick.

Keep the head up whenever possible, we have to survey our surroundings.

Activity 2: End Zone (10 mins)

Description

Split the group into 4. The Reds start with the ball. The aim is to 'beat the defender' and dribble into the end zone. Notice how the field is split in half to create 2 seperate channels. This is plenty of space for the players work in. As the Red starts to dribble out, the Blue must quickly get to half way. Start with passive defenders - i.e. do not instruct them to try to tackle, simply get in the way a little bit. The Red will perform the scissor to get around the defender and dribble into the end zone.

Red leaves the ball and runs (outside of the field) back to his/her line. Blue takes the ball back to his/her line. Immediately the next Red begins to dribble. After the second Red has gone, Blue will have both soccer balls and it will now be their turn to attack.

Coaching Points

Close control leading up to the defender

Confident and convincing 'scissor' to send the defender the wrong way

Bigger touch afterwards to accelerate away from defender
