Warmup Rondo (10 mins)

Organization:

7 v. 2 rondo

Instructions:

Everyone starts with 3 points. If you lose the ball you go in the middle and lose a point. (Initial defenders don't lose a point.) You can win the point back if you split the two defenders.

Ladders - Unopposed (15 mins)

Organization:

Two cones 3-5 yds. apart. Two players with a ball

Instructions:

Ball is passed through the gate, Player B takes first touch wide of the gate then plays a return pass with second touch. Player A then takes first touch back towards the gate and plays a return to B, who then takes his first touch the other way. Continue two-touch passing up and down the ladder.

Coaching Points:

Positive first touch

On your toes to receive

Head up after first touch

Triangles - Unopposed (15 mins)

Organization:

Three cones in a triangle 3 yds apart. Two players with a ball.

Instructions:

Ball is passed through the triangle, whichever window the player receives through is CLOSED for the return pass. So player B takes a first touch to another side of the triangle and then plays the return to A. Etc. Two-touch limit.

Coaching Points:

Positive first touch

Keep your distance from triangle so you have an angle for your first touch

On your toes to receive

Quick movement based on where receiver takes his first touch so that you're open for the return pass

Progressions:

P - Add scoring. Players start with 10 points. If you miss the triangle -1pt. If you take more than 2 touches -1pt.

R - Allow a third touch.

Technical Development - Opposed (20 mins)

Organization:

1.Two 20 x 30 yard areas as shown

2.Two teams of 6 players

3.Lots of soccer balls with coach

Description:

1.The Coach passes a ball into each area, teams send two players into opposing half to play 4 v 2

2.Defending players attempt to steal ball and return it to their own area

3.If successful, play 6 v 2 with 2 soccer balls for as long as possible

4.Attacking team scores points for every pass completed when both soccer balls are in their own area

Coaching Points:

1.Speed of play

2.Importance of using 1st touch to move away from pressure

3.Keep the ball moving

4.Awareness of space

5.Combination play to keep defenders moving and unbalanced

Progression:

1.P - Add 3rd defender if attacking team keep both balls for a set period of time

2.R – Send only one player over to defend to play 5v1

3.R - Use only one ball. Possessing team gets a point if they complete 5 consecutive passes during the 6v2.

Free Play (30 mins)

Organization:

1. 30x20 fields.

2. Teams of 3 or 4 (depending on numbers).

Instructions:

1. Three touch maximum.

2. Restarts: kick-in or dribble in from side.

3. No corners. Start from own goal if ball goes out for corner.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Know your next objective.

3. Positive first touch

4. Ability to take touch away from pressure, into space.

5. Application of techniques taught in training.

Progressions:

- Two-touch maximum

- After 10 minutes open game to free play (i.e. unlimited touches).
