Passing In Lines (20 mins)

Setup

Two lines of four cones set 10 yards apart and spaced 5 yards apart (eight players). One pair of players at each cone with a ball.

Organization

Players will begin with a right foot inside pass. The receving player will receive the ball, make a proper first touch 45 degrees in front of them, behind the cone and then pass back to Player 1 with the left foot. Then reverse feet and then add outside of the foot touches and last a stepover feint.

Coaching Points

Where should your first touch be to make it easy for you to make a good pass?

What part of the foot is best to use to make an accurate pass?

How do we position our foot to make a straight pass down the line?

What angle should the first touch be?

4 v 4 w/ Neutrals (30 mins)

Setup

30 x 30 grid

Organization

2 teams of 4 inside

1 neutral outside on each side

Set up two grids with 4 v 4 on one and 3 v 3 on the other. We will have 17 or 18 players.

Objective

Goal is to pass the ball across the space from 1 neutral player to the 1 on the other side. 1 point for each successful transition across the field.

Neutral players may be used at any time and can move anywhere horizontally on the touchline - 2 min games rotate

Begin with the neutral players able to pass back to any player on the field, then require that the pass back from the neutral player must go to any player other than the one who made the pass to the neutral player. This encourages players to find space and be aware of where they are on the field relative to the ball.

Coaching Points

1 - Is your pass strong enough to make it to the player you were passing to?

2 - First touch - What direction should your first touch be? into space / tight / away from pressure

3 - If the ball is here, where can you be to make yourself open for a pass?

4 - How should we angle our body to be ready to move forward after we receive a pass? Body shape to receive to play forward

5 - How can we let player know we're ready to receive a pass? - Communication

Setup

Instructions

There will be 18 players, so divide into three teams of 6 w/ pinnies. The team who is scored on moves off the field and the resting team rotates on. If it takes too long to score, then add a time element.

Coaching Points

Focus on the players passing and receiving during this scrimmage time. Use the time to correct movement off the ball and passing technique. Add a restriction that awards a free kick for "booting" the ball.
