Start (30 mins)

Playing through Midfield

Organisation

Use half of a small pitch (40 yds x 30 yds)

Create two zones marked by cones - a defensive zone and a midfield zone

Use one goal for red team and place 3 mini goals at the far end of the midfield zone

Organise two teams - reds v blues

Place blue goalkeeper in the main goal - no goalkeepers in the mini goals.

4 red defenders in defensive zone together with one attacking player

3 red midfielders in midfield zone together initially with two blue midfield players

Instructions

Play always starts with the red teams goalkeeper.

All Players must remain within their zones.

Red team must play ball through defensive area, into Midfield zone, and attempt to play the ball into the mini goals.

Blue players, when in possession, must attempt to pass ball to forwards who can then attempt to score in the red goal.

Key Coaching Points

Encourage Red Defensive players to retain their shape and mark zonally when not in possession.

Red Defensive players must seek to play the ball to Midfield players.

Encourage movement of red Midfield players - into space and to support - when Defensive players are in possession, and also when the red midfield players are in possession within the midfield zone.

Red Defensive player to aid red Midfield players when passing to them by instructing them whether to hold or turn.

Remind red Midfield Players that the ball can be returned to a red defensive player if the need arises, in order to retain possession.

If there is limited option of progressing down one side of the pitch, can play be switched to the other side via the goalkeeper - goalkeeper being restricted to two touches.

Progressions

Allow red Defensive player to move into the Midfield zone (to create greater overlap) upon completion of a successful pass into red Midfield player - but stress importance of regaining 4 man zonal defence when possession is lost.

Allow midfield Blue players to enter defensive zone when they have obtained possession, in order to support the two attcaking players.

Blue players must seek to score within 10 seconds after gaining possession of the ball.

Add a further blue Midfield Player to equalise player numbers and generate greater realism in the Midfield Zone.

As soon as a successful pass is made to a red Midfield player, and two red Defensive players can enter the Midfield Zone - and defensive players must adjust shape accordingly

Variations

Increase the length of the pitch to 50 yards;

Use 3 v 3 red/blue players in Midfield zone and introduce a neutral player.

Place additional pressure on red Defensive Players by introducing a third red attacking player
