Ball mastery warm-up

Organization:

1. Open area.

2. Every player with a ball.

Instructions:

1. Coach demonstrates various pick-up skills (e.g. fish, scoop, roll flick).

2. Following pick-ups, players perform juggling challenge.

a) Bounce, juggle, catch x10,

b) Bounce, juggle, catch, bounce, juggle, bounce, juggle, catch (add one bounce-juggle after each turn)

3. After 3-5 minutes, players dribble in open area.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up.

2. Soft, controlled touches.

3. Use of both feet.

4. Light on toes.

Progressions:

1. Ensure players keep track of their scores. Encourage players to set and break records.

Dribbling Warm-Up

Organization:

1. 30x30 - big square (in blue).

2. 8x8 (make 10x10 if necessary) - small square (in red).

3. Small square directly in center of area.

4. Every player with a ball.

Instructions:

1. Players dribble inside big square looking to avoid small square.

2. Introduce Messi and Ronaldo dribbling.

3. When coach calls a color (blue or red) players have to dribble into that colored area.

4. Competition - do not be the last to get into the square.

5. End with knockout game.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Tight space/small area - dribble like Messi.

3. Lots of space/big area - dribble like Ronaldo.

4. Messi - pinky toe, one touch per step, close control.

5. Ronaldo - instep, one touch every 2-3 steps, bigger touch into space.

6. Look up every time ball is played out of feet.

Progressions:

1. Knockout game - players dribble in blue square and look to kick each other's ball out of the area.

2. If a player is knocked out, she can get back in by performing a skill inside the red square.

* Skills to perform*

a) 10 toe taps,

b) 10 boxes,

3) If a player is knocked out, she becomes a defender.

Technical Non/Semi-Opposed

Organization:

1. Players distributed evenly at corners as shown.

2. Every player with a ball.

3. Central square is 5x5 (adjust as necessary).

4. Starting position at corner is 10-15yds from closest cone in middle.

Instructions:

1. First player from each white team runs through square upon making eye contact.

2. As soon as they are out of the square, the first players from blue group do the same.

3. Process repeats for set time (2-3 minutes).

4. If possible, progress to roll push at red cone before going through to other side.

Coaching Points:

1. Connection with teammate - eye contact.

2. First touch - big, into space (Ronaldo).

3. Run in a straight line to cover more ground more quickly.

4. Take smaller touches to slow down as space decreases.

5. Technical execution of roll push.

Progressions:

1. Work on both sides (right and left).

2. Competition - place balls on top of cones. Teams lose a point if they knock ball down.

3. Four players at once - first team to get all players across wins a point.

Technical Opposed

Organization:

1. 10x10 square (make 12x12 or 15x15 if necessary).

2. Attackers (in white) with balls.

3. Defender (in blue) without ball.

Instructions:

1. Attackers look to dribble their ball to any of the other three sides of the square.

2. Defender must remain inside the area and attempt to steal the ball/prevent penetration.

3. Attackers get one point for going laterally (left or right) and two points for going forward.

4. Play for set time. Attacker with lowest score becomes defender.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Recognition of space in front.

3. Recognition of space behind defender.

4. Aggressiveness - look to attack space quickly.

5. Decision - dribble like Messi or Ronaldo.

Progressions:

1. If defender wins a ball, she becomes an attacker and the dispossessed player defends.

Organization:

1. 30x20 (or 40x30 depending on players' ability).

2. Teams set up as shown.

Instructions:

1. Free play: 4v4.

2. Restarts: kick-in or dribble in. No corners.

Coaching Points:

1. Recognition of space.

2. Three lines of attack.

3. Movement and angles of support to create space.

4. Positive mentality - get forward.
