Stuck in The Mud (5 mins)

Warm Up - requires at least half a field or adequate space for 10 players

Players (red) start without soccer balls. For the first round have at least 2 coaches (blue) play the mud monsters. If the players get tagged by the mud monsters they are Stuck in the Mud. This is essentially a game of freeze tag w.out the ball! Coaches should allow for basic success and keep defensive "tag" pressure at medium level (50%). If players are tagged and are stuck in the mud they must stand still with their legs open. To become unstuck another players must crawl thru the stuck players legs. The players should be encouraged to shout for help when stuck in the mud. Play for only a few minutes, check for comprehension / success.

Progreesion #1

All players are given a ball and asked to dribble w. close control in space. The mud monsters then have to tag or touch the soccer balls of the other players. If a mud monster touches your soccer ball you have to hold your soccer ball above your head and shout for help. To get unstuck one of the other players must dribble their ball thru your legs.

Progression #2

Coach teaches drag / pull back move in order for players to change direction / speed and evade defenders and allows players to practice

Coach then teaches basic cut or touch with the inside or outside of foot to continue forward dribbling but to avoid oncoming defender

Progression #3

Up the defensive pressure for the mud monsters (75-100%)

Coaching Points

- keep ball close w. small touch dribbles

- use the inside, outside and instep / laces for dribbling... use sole of foot for drag back

- keep head up and eyes open to avoid taggers and teammates

End Zone Dribble (15 mins)

Players start with a ball in one half of field. Players are asked to dribble in close control only on that half. On coach command, players must cross halfway line and dribble in control passed coach defender and into the opposite end zone. Coach should look to steal loose balls and play them back into starting zone. Players should look to stop ball in desired end zone.

If space is small, look to create 1-2 "safe zones" that players can dribble to when avoiding coach defender.

Progressions:

1.) Coach ups defensive pressure

2.) Coach includes mandatory moves (pull back, or teach a step over / change of direction move to incorportate if skill set is apparent in players)

3.) Coach has players dribble to collect all cones from yellow end zone to bring back to red in continuous dribble game.

Coaching Points:

- Players should keep the ball close so that they can avoid it being stolen and be able to stop it in the end zone

- On coach command, players should take a positive touch towards attacking end zone to change direction, then accelerate in control to end zone

Gates Dribbling (10 mins)

Set up - On same play space, create enough gates w. tall cones (roughly a yard apart)

All players (red) with ball at feet, are to dribble in space, avoiding gates. On Coach (blue) whistle / command, players are to find an open gate to attack and dribble through. Players then dribble freely and await next coach whistle / command.

Progressions:

1.)Coaches are moving about the play space before whistle / command so that the players do not know what gates will be "open". Coaches can also move freely to any gate AFTER the whistle / command

2.)On whistle / command players must first complete a change of direction move (cut with in or outside of foot or drag back), then attack "open" gates with pace.

Coaching Points

- keep the ball close when dribbling

- listen for whistle / command and change direction / speed as needed to find "open" gate

- keep head up and eyes open to find gates and avoid teammates

- avoid running / knocking over gate cones

1v1 (10 mins)

Set up: Same play space, pick up gates and create 2 cenral lines at opposite ends facing each other. For this drill, you will most likely want to have more attacking players (red) than defending (blue). Create 2 goals (puggs or cones) at each corner of the "defending" (blue) end. Place all balls with defending blue players.

Defending (blue) players will, one at a time, pass a ball down to the first attacking (red) player to start the drill. The receiving / attacking (red) player will then attack either of the 2 goals at the far end and look to score on Pugg goals or dribble the end line on coned goals.

Progressions:

1.) Rotate roles of players

2.) Remove one of the goals and place a central goal only

3.) Add a goal at the attacking end for defending players to attack if they win the ball

4.) Add a second attacked to create a 2 v 1

Coaching Points

- Good positive first touch

- Look for defender to reach or be off balance / out of position and attack

- Attack with speed if possible

- Avoid shooting past defender as you MUST dribble

- Head up and find space to attack goals... shoot only when close!

Small Sided Games (15 mins)

Small Sided Game -split your play space into 2 fields. Cone sidelines if needed and have goals at each end of field (4 total).

2 vs. 2 on each field (if you have odd numbers, you can play 3 vs. 2 or if you have 10 players you can play 2 vs.2 on one field and 3 vs. 3 on the other) with no goalies. Use spots to mark off goal crease where players cannot enter. Goals must be scored from outside the crease. Teams can be rotated as needed.

Progression #1

Award points for players who are changing speed / direction or performing covered moves

Progression #3

Create #'s up situations by adding an offensive player allowing for more potential opportunities for #'s up team to dribble and attack

Coaching Points

- dribble to get away and past opponents

- shoot from outside crease

- freeze when ball leaves playing space

- Stop play when you need to set up a coaching point from today's skill objective
