1v1 Defending Warm-up (20 mins)

Objective: Improve individual defending technique

Area: ¼ of Campton indoor field

Activity: Players start with ladder exercise, see diagram. Each player will enter 3 times with the left foot and enter the ladder 3 times with the right. Players navigate through ladder and whilst in the last rung, free player plays a ball into feet and the ladder player one touches back and then continues to take a good angle of approach into the ball, gets into a good defensive stance (hips open, on balls of feet, arrive quickly, but shorten steps as you get into the attacking player) for 2 seconds and switches with free player. Free player jogs to end of line and awaits her turn.

Coaching Points: Speed and technique through the ladders. Use your arms to drive you through the ladder. Run the ladders, do not place your feet in between the rungs. When defending, good body shape; as you close, check shoulders; fast approach, slow arrival; good angle to the ball in relation to the goal; on balls of your feet and keep them active.

1v1 Defending (25 mins)

Objective: Improve individual defending technique while under pressure

Area: ¼ of Campton indoor field

Activity: Defending team starts with the ball. They play across to the attacking team. If the attacking team can score a goal, they get one point. If the defending team can win the ball and play back to their line, they get one point. Play for 3-4 minutes at a high intensity. The losing team should do extra training.

Coaching Points: Fast approach slow arrival; take an angle of pressure to the ball that eliminates the attacker opportunity of shooting to goal; up on the balls of your feet and keep them active; manipulate attacker to where you want him/her to go; be patient when deciding to tackle; if attacking player pushes ball by you, step across his face and shield the ball away to win it!

Progressions: 1) Defender cannot steal the ball, only allowed to block or usher attacking player into touch 2) Defender can steal

1v1 Defending to Delay (25 mins)

Objective: Improve individual defending technique to delay

Area: ¼ of Campton indoor field

Activity: Attacking team plays a pass to start play. Once player receives ball, second defender can play. First defender must apply immediate pressure in order to delay attacking player long enough to get second man behind the ball. Play for 3-4 minutes at a high intensity. Attackers can only shoot within the shaded area and get a point for any goal they score. Defenders must dribble across opposing line if they win it for a point.
