Defending Warm Up

Organization: Does not need grids. Can simply be sets of two cones. If using grids, then as many as required. Apprx 7x10 meters. 1 ball between pairs.

Instructions: Players are simply instructed to shadow the attacking player. Attacking player must cut/zig zag their way from one cone to the other.

Coaching Points:

1) Defender must shadow, not actually steal the ball.

2) Defender must adjust their body shape to that of the attacker, constantly.

3) Defender needs to be light on toes and able to shuffle/run backwards and sideways.

4) Follow the ball not the player.

5) Sidways on, never get caught flat footed or square on.

Progressions:

If an oppertunity presents itself to steal then do so, and then the defender takes it to the opposite cone to score.

Technical 2v1

Organization: Big grid with two goals and two goal keepers.

Instructions:Game is one directional other than counter attacks. Keeper serves ball into 1st attacker.

Coaching Points:

1) Eat up the ground quickly to deny the attacker space.

2) Delay, don't dive in.

3) Bend run to show the attacker inside or outside (if outside, use touchline as a defender).

4) Deny penetration to goal.

5) Make the tackle.

2v1

Follow above but also;

6) Ball carier is the immediate danger but also position yourself in the best place to be able to cover both players as best you can.

7) If possible block passing lane whilst maintaining pressure on the ball carrier.

2v2

8) Pressure and Cover

9) Communication.

10) Double team if on.

11) Keep pressure on ball carrier if attackers switch.

2v1 with Recovery Runner

Follow above points but also;

12) Delay the attacker until recovery runner is in a better position.

13) Communicate with recovery runner. "I've got ball" etc.

14) Ball carrier is the immediate threat so original defender should pressure him whilst the recovery runner takes up a position which is good enough to;

*block passing lane

*pressure 2nd attacker if ball is successfully played to him

*pressure 1st attacker if 1st defender misses him or he is now not in a possition to use the 2nd attacker.

Covering Defender

Follow above points but also;

15) Balancing defender must read the danger and provide the cover for the exposed side.

Progressions:

Go to the 2v2 Goal Scoring Game. Winner Stays On.
