Warm up

Organization:

Two 15x15 yard grids are created side-by-side as shown in Diagram (b) below. Goalkeepers are positioned at each end of the grids to act as target players. A 4v4 is organized in each grid as shown. The setup is repeated to accommodate the entire team. Note - Two games of 4v4 are illustrated

Instructions:

One player from the defending team must remain in the opposite grid as shown above. The other 3 teammates must attempt to gain possession from the 4 opposing players. This creates a numbers-down situation for the defensive team and forces them to work as a unit to regain possession. If the defensive team wins possession they must quickly switch the ball to their teammate in the opposite grid. Immediately they must travel to support the play. In the Diagram above, Player (A) has won possession of the ball and quickly passes to his/her teammate in the opposite grid. The blues will now transition quickly to support the play while the yellow team must send over 3 players to defend. Points are awarded for a successful switch and 7 consecutive passes.

Coaching Points:

• Work together to defend as a unit

• Attempt to regain possession quickly.

• Immediately look to switch the ball on gaining possession.

• Travel quickly to support the play.

Technical Touches

(from Ian Richard's: Curriculum, Tier 2, Passing)

Organization:

10 x 30 yard area with 2 x 5 yard area either end, set up as shown

Players work in teams

One ball per team

Instructions:

Receiving -

1. Player A passes the ball into Player B.

2. Player B flicks the ball into his/her hands, and then tosses the ball back to Player A.

3. Player A must receive with his/her feet, thigh, or chest in order to settle the ball down.

4. After settling the ball Player A passes the ball to Player B, Player B passes back, and Player A flicks the ball into his/her hands.

5. Repeat pattern.

6. Players must work on receiving the ball with each surface for 3 minutes each.

Passing (Lofting) -

1. Players must look to drive the ball into their partner’s area

2. Their partner must attempt to control the ball without leaving their area

3. If the ball lands in the box, the player that hit the driven ball gets a point

4. If the receiver can control the ball inside the box with 1 touch, they also receive a point

5. After players receive the ball they must open their body up and dribble in the opposite direction, towards the cone placed behind them.

6. As the player with the ball dribbles away, the player who passed the ball will check away, and once the player with the ball turns and faces, the player will check back to the ball.

7. Players must check their shoulders before and after they pass/receive the ball.

Coaching Points:

1. Angle of approach

2. Head up to observe target

3. Placement of non-kicking foot

4. Recognizing when to check away/to the ball
