CG: Using the Width (20 mins)

SET UP:

- Players play normal match set up, trying to attack other team's goal

- Players from the attacking team are only allowed in the shaded area

- Depending on age of players on numbers at the session, limit certain to take up wide position. E.G. Only full backs or wingers.

KEY POINTS:

- Attacking team;

- Upon winning the ball, the team must create width straight away

- Who is able to create width (depending on coaching philosophy; both wingers? Both full backs?)

- How can the ball be worked into the wide areas with speed and quality

- Decision making process; does the ball have to go wide? Or does player's movement wide create more opportunities to play through the middle?

- Defending team:

- When losing the ball, wide players need to tuck in and play narrow

- Session could be altered to work on transition from attack to defence

POTENTIAL PROGRESSIONS:

- Limit touches to players in wide areas

- Two goals awarded for goals which come from the wide area

- Coach has a ball in hand, which can be played to opposing team at any time. Players must leave current ball and react to new one as quickly as possible.

Review / Reflect (to be completed after each session)..
