Defending and Attacking

Session Area

20x20 yard area

Set Up

Blues and reds on same side all limited to one touch. Players can drop off on area to around 3-5 yards maximum.

Green if middle player who can play for both sides.

Middle three white players are attempting to press and win the ball back.

If whites win the ball back they switch with team who gave the ball away.

Key Points

Quality of pass, break the lines of the defence, free green player looking to bounce ball back as often as possible.

Challenges

10 passes = 1 goal

Session Area

Same 20x20 area as previous

Set Up

Now set up sees three vs three in the middle with four players on the outside.

Players on the outside have two touch and can not play to another outside player.

If team loses possesion it goes to opposite side.

Key Points

When player on the outside has the ball vital attacking team brake into a diamond shape making pitch as big as possible.

Challenges

Same as previous with ten passes=a goal.

Progression 2

Session Area

Set up 30x20 yards set up on centre circle of pitch.

Set Up

4 vs 4 with 4 players on the outside of grid in three different sides.

Blues start with the ball looking to maintain posession. Can use players on the outside again who are again limited to two touches.

If opposition team wins the ball i.e. reds they have to pass the ball to whites on the outside.

Reds will then switch with whites. Reds now outside players with whites now the attacking team.

Again if blues win the ball from whites they need to get ball to reds and switch again.

Key Points

Diamond shape when outside player has the ball.

Importance of a fast and tight pressing game for team without the ball.

Aim to win the ball back within six seconds.

"70% of goals are scored within ten seconds of losing posession."

Challenges

Team with the most passes to switch wins. 5/10 minute games.

10 Passes a goal also.

Final Progession with goals

Session Area

Same as previous with now goalkeeper and goals on the edge of the 18 added.

Set Up

Same as previous game where defending team aims to win the ball back and get the ball to an outside player.

Now when they defending team retains the ball and passes to outside player they do a one two releasing this player to have a one vs one with the keeper to score.

Key Points

Make it count when through with goalkeeper.

More focus now when won the ball to hit the two top players on outside of grid closest to goal to get a one two and will be through closer to goal.

Challenges

Team with the most goals wins.
