Few vs Many (15 mins)

Few vs Many Defending

Ball starts in the central square (20 x 20) where the white team have a 4 v 2 advantage. 2 defending blues must try to win the ball and remove it from the square. Once this is accomplished, the blue team have a 10 v 4 advantage over half of the field and the white team must work together to isolate and retrieve the ball. When white team force the ball out or win it back, they restart in the central square.

Coaching points:

(Applicable to the 2 blue defenders and then to the 4 white defenders)

- Work together as a unit, employ pressure, cover, and balance.

- Pressure defender; bend run to force ball towards cover and balance defenders.

- Cover and Balance defenders, recognise before the fact that the ball will be forced towards you

- Use this recognition to constrict space early in the area the ball is being forced to.

Functional (30 mins)

Functional - Formation Specific

Blue team scores in either A or B. White team scores in main goal. Ball always starts with goalkeeper who must roll or pass ball out to one of his back 4. White team should try to pressure quickly and force ball toward covering teammates, into traffic, rather than allowing a ball up the touchline.

Coaching points:

- (Right or Left Mid) Bend run to take away the option of passing up the line

- (Forward) Take away option of passing pack to GK

- (CM) Recognise where the ball is being forced to and constrict the space

- (DCM) Slide to the ball side and seal off the path up the touchline and also cover the angle between central midfield and the small goals.

Run this part of the practice fairly slowly, running through each unit of the team, FW, MID, Def MID, individually so that each unit knows their job first. Then begin to speed it up and make it more game like to see if they can perform their tasks at game speed.
