Passing and Receiving

This is just a variation on the first box. All the same principles apply. (body position, receive with one foot play with the other etc).

Again you change direction so the ball is going the other direction.

A further progression is to allow the boys to make any pass to any player. This was good because it meant the receivers had to be especially sharp as a pass could come any time. Still only two touches.

Once the speed has improved, the cooach should get in the middle and walk/compete to get the ball. You'll do this fast or slow depending on th skills in the group

2-box numbers possession game

Set up/rules

- two teams of four or five players each

- the pitch is cut into two halves, one team in each - each team has a ball

- To start, the boys in each team are numbered 1-2-3-4-5

- Each team passes a ball within their own box

- the coach shouts out "Number 1 - get the ball" (or whatever number) and the numbered boy from each team runs in to the other box to win the ball.

- Whichever boy gets the ball first wins a point for his team. The coach keeps the score.

Coaching points -

- call to the passer/receiver

- check the shoulder before calling for the ball

- receive the ball with the back foot.

- move the ball to be far away from the challenger

3 v 2 channel - space, possession, scoring

Very simple 3 v 2 drill working in a channel.

Player 1 and 2 are defenders. Players 3, 4 and 5 are attackers

Defender (1 or 2) passes up to any of the attackers... chase the ball to put pressure on the attackers

The attackers receive the ball, control it and coordinate their attack (triangles) to control possession, make space and score.

Coaching points for attackers

1) controlling the ball

2) spread out - make space

3) communicate

4) maintain a triangle - ensure there is always a spare man to pass to.

Coaching points for the defenders

1) One defender chases the ball to put pressure on the receiver - don't over-commit

2) approach and take defensive position, side-on to push the attacker to the sides

3) challenge to win the ball, look to see movement of the spare man
