5 colour cone call (5 mins)

Cones set out as shown. (This can be performed with more than one pair of keepers at a time)

Keeper starts on green cone (everything that happens in this drill goes through the greene cone). Coach calls a colour and the keeper has to go to that cone and touch it and return to the greene cone.

Coaching point - If coach calls cone colour towards back keeper turn body slightly to that side and use short steps in a backward motion to get the (the opposite for front cones).

3 x 1min (Calls must be rapid to ensure a good work out)

Crossover step footwork (5 mins)

Teaching the crossover step

Technique of the step is not crossing one leg past the other like a carioca. Turn the hips and run in the direction they want to go, but with their upper body facing the ball. If there is a long way to go, use the crossover, then end with a few quick shuffles to adjust the final position for making the catch.

Warm Up activity to focus on the GK's ability to use the technique of the crossover step.

Instructions:

Activity starts with coach as server. Coach serves ball as the players use crossover step to get across goal. Can also start without ball.

Coaching Points:

-Crossover step technique

-Cover distance

-Decision Making

Teaching the crossover step (getting across goal quickly)

Crossover Step

To cover more ground quicker

To get across the face of goal to be in correct position to make save

Technique of the step is not crossing one leg past the other like a carioca. Turn the hips and run in the direction they want to go, but with their upper body facing the ball. If there is a long way to go, use the crossover, then end with a few quick shuffles to adjust the final position for making the catch.

Instructions:

Goalkeeper will move to one side, make save, distribute and move across goal to save next shot. Goalkeeper can start to focus on movement only by not having first ball striked and just move and set in that position.

Coaching Points:

-Proper set position

-Good body shape

-Crossover step vs shuffle

-Decision Making
