Receiving Under Pressure / Back to Goal (20 mins)

Receiving under pressure / back to goal

A is the passer, B is the receiver, C is the defender.

Phase 1 is a simple reception under passive pressure, B must take one touch to control the ball, keeping it in the square, and play a pass back to A, players then rotate one spot.

In Phase 2, B must again receive under passive pressure but this time must take at least 3 touches and exit the square via side 1 or side 2.

Phase 3, repeat both under active pressure.

Coaching Points

- Embrace the contact. In a contact sport it is going to happen, players must accept and be ready for that.

- Maintain composure. Defensive pressure does not have to induce panic, if the right body position is assumed then possession can only change if the defender fouls.

- Use the contact. A defender you can feel is one whose movement you can anticipate and react more efficiently to. Use their contact to make your decision.

This drill addresses the role of the striker dropping to the ball.

Structured Phase of Play (20 mins)

Same set up as previous drill with high striker included.

Defender always with active pressure. Receiving player must take at least 2 touches but can choose whether to roll outside or inside with ball. High striker must react to that decision. Players play to goal. Teams alternate turns.

Coaching Points

- If dropping striker rolls outside with ball, high striker makes run A to get across the front of the defender at the front post.

- If dropping striker rolls inside, high striker makes movement B, dropping to defenders blind side to receive a pass into feet one that side of the defender, or a lead pass on the outside.

Progress to receiver passing back to passer and high striker dropping into shaded area C with the receiver rolling out and becoming the high striker playing off of him / her.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Conditioned Game

Simple game to encourage depth between the strikers. Field has three zones, defensive, midfield, and offensive thirds. When out of possession all players must be in their applicable zone. In possession players can enter any zone. To score a striker must receive in the midfield third. Only a midfielder or defender can score. This will encourage those players to advance ahead of the strikers and exploit the space that their movement creates.
