Defending 1v1 Technique (15 mins)

Split group into two teams. Set up grid approx. 12 x 16 yds. Goal in corner. Play begins with defender passing ball to attacker. Defender then tries to keep attacker from scoring in 1v1 situation.

Progression:

Defender can not pressure until attacker takes first touch.

Defender applies immediate pressure.

Coaching Points:

1.Apply pressure quickly- good body shape, side on.

2.Angle of approch - cut off target.

3.Bump player 1st and win ball 2nd.

Small Group 2v2 to Goal (25 mins)

Set up field approx. 40 x 40. Split group into two teams. Play begins with defender passing ball into either attacker creating a 2v2 situation to goal. Play until ball goes out or goal is scored.

Progression:

1.Add Neutral player for 3v2 numbers up situation.

2.Add third player for 3v3.

3.Add Neutral to 3v3 for 4v3 numbers up situations.

Coaching Points:

1.First defender is Pressure and second defender is Cover.

2.Communication - Who has pressure and who has cover.

3.Transition - attack to defence or defence to attack?

Functional Defending (20 mins)

Play 9 v 7. Nine players attacking 2 wide target goals. Focus on defending using a 1-4-3-1 (1-4-3-3) against an attacking 1-3-3.

Coaching Points:

1.Pressure, Cover, Balnce, Support, and Depth.

2.Communication.

3.Recovery runs.
