Description

Training Objectivies: Teach players the movements necessary to elude defenders, the value and importance of timing, and how those aspects of play help possesion. Teach players the options we have for a throw in, the movements of players and the ball and how to retain possession with a throw in. Teach players the touches to create space to get in on goal and the angles that give us the best option to finish. When to possess and when to go to goal.

What are the movements to elude defenders, and when does a player make them? What are the typical runs in each area of the field? How can these runs influence the timing of passes, our ability to read the play and predict the next pass, and play more fluid? Why is communication important for fast play? When do we take risks to penetrate, especially in 1v1 situations, & when should we make the safe pass to retain possession? What are our options for throwins?

Visual Cues: Seeing the timing of runs influences when & where to play the pass. If there is space, we can play into it, run into it to penetrate. This space can be wide, or high up the field. As the defensive team shifts, they can get out of shape and give us pockets of space to run into, combine quickly, and penetrate to goal.

Movements to Create Space & Pentrate (15 mins)

Organization: Teams of 5 complete pattern. Pass-Follow Pass. Add or combine in 2nd team to be defenders, but do not challenge for the ball or disrupt play. Defenders only mirror movements of team in possession. Change roles every 3 minutes.

Instructions: On passes, play 2 touch. When dribbling, recieve the ball into the space and drive forward as fast as possible.

Coaching Points: Quality of passes. Play to correct foot. Open up to receive and take touch forward into space. Movements should be quick enough to confuse & elude defensive team. Timing of runs make play fluid, easy to read but difficult to defend. Timing of run is affected by quality of previous passes, quality of touches, and speed of player on the ball. Disguising movements to elude defense.

Notes: You can do more than one group without defenders, and then combine groups to get the defenders. Adding the defenders should give the players in possession the feelings of defenders while playing. Make sure the defense does not disrupt the play, simply be a cat & mouse shadow of their player. You can make it into a competition to see if the players can move the ball faster than the defense. Show the players when they would have success based on their movements and when they would be well defended. Challenge them to play as fast as possible.

Overlap or Dummy Combination to Goal (20 mins)

Organization: One team is combining middle players. 2 players check into middle to combine for overlapping option or dummy leave. Combining players continue runs to opposite sides. Rotate all teams to checking/combining players. Can add a defensive team to track runs, but not challenge.

Instructions: Continue to work on the timing of runs, playing to the next pass, correct foot & reading the combination. Communication should be timely, so players know what their team mates are doing and their intention, however the quality of their 1st touch can dictate a change in the combination, demanding the ball be differently in a new direction. Players should be ready and prepared if this happens. Communication should be prior to the arrival of the ball.

Coaching Points: Timing and angles of all runs. Communication to call for ball and let players know what the plan is. Timing and quality of combining players runs to clear space for overlapping players. Call for a dummy only if that is a better option, determined by the position of players and pace of the pass. If a defensive team is added - quality and pace of runs to elude defenders.

6v6 Directional Possession (20 mins)

Organization: Teams play 4v4 or 5v5 in grid to switch play to each side. Play with feet and player who plays out goes out, and outside player goes in. Play with throw ins from outside player, and switch outside player. Can play with a GK who fields variety of balls and distributes back into grid.

Instructions: Good activity to train throw ins, quick restarts of set pieces, or goalkeeper distribution. Just insert these options for the players on the outside of the grid. When they get the ball, they need to perform that certain task for play to be restarted. Coach the movements of the players and the ball that you want in these restarts without wasting training time on throw ins, or playing short on set pieces. Make sure outside players are moving along the grid and not standing. These outside players have an excellent opportunity to read play, communicate to the players in the grid - because they are not directly involved in the combination. This is extremely important for your GKs and Center Backs - but players of all positions should benefit.

Coaching Points: Movements off ball to drag defenders & create space for new player. Movements and checking angles to create options for passes. Timing and communication to keep ball movement fast and as quick as possible.

1/2 Field 7v7 Soccer (20 mins)

Organization: Divide players into 2 teams and play 1/2 field soccer. Defensive team scores by getting ball to coach (or 2nd GK hands). Offensive team plays to goal. Play touchlines with quick restarts (throw ins). All other restarts begin at 1/2 field. Switch team roles after 10 minutes. Keep score.

Instructions: Coach within the game, while they play and only at natural stoppages. I like the 1/2 court game because each team is "locked" in their roles, whether defensive or offensive. This way you can continue working on the offensive movements with each team without having them transition and switch to defense. If you have time, you could easily progress it to a full field scrimmage.

Coaching Points: Play fluid, and elude defenders with quality off ball movements to retain possession. Quick, purposeful throw in restarts to retain possession. Penetrate when you can, but do not force it. When near the box, think = can I play the target player? Can I get into a position to play it if I recieve next pass? Can I get the ball to someone who can?
