Part 1

The course is made up of six pairs of parallel cones, approximately 6 yards apart. Two players start at

the same time from the first pair of cones, jog along the inside of the cones and do the various exercises on the way. After the last cone, they run back along the outside. On the way back, speed

can be increased progressively as players warm up.

1. Jog through 5 times

2. Hip out (groin movement) - 2 sets

3. Hip in (groin movement) - 2 sets

4. Circle partner - 2 sets

5. Jumping with shoulder contact - 2 sets

6. Quick forward and backwards sprints - 2 sets

Part 2

1. Plank - 3 sets X 20s

2. SIde Plank - 3 sets X 20s

Part 3

Do each exercise twice.

1. Run 40 Metres across pitch at 75-80%, jog rest, then jog back. - 2 sets

2. Running bounding - 2 sets

3. Running, plant and cut - 2 sets

Passing and Receiving (15 mins)

Set up:

Manikin or a cone is set up like a player 10 yards (coaches preference) from server. Another cone is 1-2 yards behind manikin with another player holding a red and yellow cone 5 yards behind.

How It Works:

Player working around manikin makes runs on both sides to receive ball and pass. Service should be arriving as the player working is coming to receive the ball.

The player behind the active player is moving in the same direction and is holding up a red or yellow cone for the active player to call out before receiving the ball.

Each player will work for 30-40 seconds. Repeat skills as needed.

Sequences:

1. 2 touch (receive and ass with far foot - safe side) - movement should be to turn sideways by opening up body

2. One touch - movement should be to turn sideways by opening up body

3. One touch, then back up on angle while calling out colour again and play 2 touch before moving to other side. It is important for player holding cones to move inside so that active player can see cone as they are backing up to receive.

4. Receive around manikin/cone across to other side and play (2 touches), then back up on angle while calling out colour again and play 2 touch before moving to other side. It is important for player holding cones to move inside so that active player can see cone as they are backing up to receive.

Active player then comes forward to perform skill on other side.

Keys:

1. As player aproaches, layers hop step/set themselves up to play as quickly as possible

2. 1st touch control (with middle of foot) and pass with middle of foot

3. Check shoulder as receiving

4. Passes should be made away from manikin (safe side)

5. Automatic movement after pass

Movement 1 v 1 With Support Playerss (35 mins)

Setup:

In groups of 5 in a 12 x 12 yard grid. There are support players on each side with 2 active players working on each end with a passive defender in the middle to start.

How It Works:

Player with ball does 1 of the movements demonstrated by coach against a passive defender in the middle. After the attacker completes the movement, they play the ball to the player on the other end. The attacker then becomes the passive defender while the defender goes to open spot. The sequence continues again.

Players can alternate sides (i.e. 1st pass to left support side, then right side).

Rotate servers before moving on to next movement.

Movements:

1. Give and go (top left picture): Attacker has to commit defender and run on outside of player (some players will run on the inside).

2. Forward run, then check back (bottom middle picture): Attacker makes pass to support player looking for a give and go but passive defender drops off and the attacker checks back on angle. As you can see, the attacker actually receives the ball behind the original spot so that they have more time and space to receive. Once passive defender steps up on attacker again, attacker does one of the moves practiced to get away and make pass to other side.

3. Forward run, check back, forward again (top right picture): Attacker looks for a give and go but defender reads the run, then defender read check back so attacker runs around defender to receive ball.

Progression:

Same drill as above, but now defenders are live. Attackers can score 1) if they are able to get the ball to other end or 2) they complete 4 passes in a row.

If they are able to pass to other end then defender remains in middle and player on other side tries the same. If the attacker completes 4 passes with the side support then the defender allows for the attacker to pass the ball to the other side to begin the sequence again.

If the defender wins the ball or it goes out then the attacker becomes the defender.

Rotate support players every few minutes.

Progression 2:

Limit the attacker to 3-4 touches so that players must rely on passing and movement.

Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball

2. Change of direction to get away from defender (Player shouldn't actually try to fake but rather change direction otherwise their fakes are too slow and obvious)

3. Watch ball and defender/read defender's reactions which decides

4. Support players need to remember to play far foot.

Possession End Line Game (25 mins)

Set Up:

25-30 x 15 grid (adjust to your group). 6 v 6 in the middle with 2 side support on each side. Ideally, 4 v 4 with 4 with the option of (1 neutral) is best. If players have difficulty then 5 v 5 with 1 or 2 inside neutrals can be used to make the game successful.

How it Works:

Each team is trying to score by stopping the ball on the line. Teams are trying to score on the same goal throughout (i.e. they DO not change direction).

Teams can use their side support who have 2 touches with their own designated support areas.

3-4 Minute Games then rotate.

Progression 1:

When using a side support player within 15 yards, the same player must get the ball back from the support player before continuing on (i.e. they will need to use movements practiced before to get open). If switching ball from sideline of one side to the other then player doesn't have to receive ball back.

Progression 2:

Using Progression 1, add cone check (calling out yellow or red cone being held up by coach)

Keys (General: Depth, Width, Improvisation, Mobility, Penetration):

1. Play forward when possible.

2. Movement after playing side support (to get open again).

3. Shoulder check before receiving

4. Continuing forward runs as ball is being played.

5. Maintain balance when going forward

Movement Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball

2. Change of direction to get away from defender (Player shouldn't actually try to fake but rather change direction otherwise their fakes are too slow and obvious)

3. Watch ball and defender/read defender's reactions which decides

4. Support players need to remember to play far foot.
