Organisation

- 12 Players split into 6 v 6 with a GK on each team (reds v blues above)

- Pitch size is 20 x 40 m, with a defensive line 10m from each goal line

Game:

This is designed to encourage high pressing, with the physical element being an improvement in endurance.

The game is played normally, with players allowed to go anywhere on the pitch and have multiple touches. Once a goal is scored, all of that team must sprint back to their respective defensive line and touch it before sprinting back and starting to press the opposition.

During this time, a player from the team that conceded can receive a ball from their GK within their own defensive line and attempt to get it high up the pitch for their team to score.

Play 3 x 5 minute games.

Physical / tactical / technical elements - The quicker the defending team recovers, the higher and more aggressively they can press. Players will naturally find themselves in unfamiliar positions within the pitch, for example, a defender on the team that scored will be near their defensive line, so can be the first person to press high which is usually the centre forwards role.

Progressions:

- Make the pitch bigger and increase the distances from the defensive lines

- Only 3 players have to return to their defensive line. This means that for a certain period of time, a team will have to defend an overload, so they have to work extra hard to make up for the lack of numbers.

- Remove the defensive line and use the goal line. If using this, it may be worth considering a minimum pass requirement for the team in possession to allow the team recovering to retreat then initiate the high press.
