Working on improving players individual decision making when in possession. When to run and when to dribble Also looking to improve skill in 1v1 situations.

-When would we dribble the ball on the pitch ?

-When would we run with the ball on the pitch ?

Coaching points

-When running, Bigger forward passes at increased speed

-When dribbling, Lift your head and look to shift the ball away from other team to pass or run

- Look for understanding in players to utilise space

-Changes of direction and impact that has on decisions

Warmup (10 mins)

Setup: 18x36 box. All players with a ball

Activity:

Players dribble inside the play area

On coaches command perform activity i.e. bells, toe taps, sole role, pull back etc...

Repeat left foot only

Technical Pratice (10 mins)

Developing understanding of the basic skill

Pre Drill

-Bib half players

-Every player with a ball

-Greens on longer lines, number them 1

-Bibbed players on shorter sides, numbered 2

Instructions

-If coach calls for 1's, players on both sides dribble across box and stop ball on the opposite side

-If coach calls for 2's players on both sides run with the ball and stop it on the opposite side

Progressions

-Call both numbers

-Rotate movement

Coaching points

-Running with the ball - Bigger strides, Lift head, stronger foot

-Driblling - Tight control, close touches, both feet

Technical Practice (10 mins)

Pre Drill

-Add inner box

-Red inside small square

-Green in Larger

Instructions

- Red players must stay inside small square and take small touches with inside of feet

-Red attempt to tag as many green players comming through the middle as possible

-Green players must run the ball through the small square as many times to the other side, avoiding being tagged

-Green players can go in and come out any side they choose.

-Keep count of how many tags/runs you make

Rotate after 5 minutes

Coaching points

-Play with head up, scanning as much as possible

-Be aware of space: when tight control ball close, when in space run with it

-Close touches from players in the middle

-Changes of direction

Game Related (10 mins)

Pre Drill

-Add a line down the middle of the pitch and add small goals(purple)

-Split the rest of the players evenly and line up with ball at diagonal cones(A+B)

Instruction

-At the same time, a player from A & B runs the ball through the central gate and goes 1v1 with defender to dribble through goal

-Once the attacker has either dribbled the ball through the goal or lost the ball, he becomes the defender and the previous defender takes the ball to the back of the closest que.

Repeat

Coaching Points

-Lifting head when dribbling/running

-Do we effectivly use the space ? (Running to the gate, dribbling if 1v1)

-Larger touches on the run, Tighter on the dribble

-Are we using skill to beat the man ?

-Is the defender showing them out ?

Game Related Progression (10 mins)

Progression

-Two Players from either side go at the same time

-Must go through seperate gates

-The player who scores by dribbling through the goal first, stays an attacker, the second becomes the defender

Coaching Points

-As before

-Does the defender commit to one player ?

-Is the player left open effectivly using the space ?

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Pre Drill

-Split into two even teams (floater if odd number)

-Add winger zone at either side of pitch with floating wingers

- 5v5 in the middle

Instructions

-Select team captains, organise your team into a formation of your choice

-Goals are scored by scoring into the goals

-Reds defend A, Greens defend B

-Both teams can use yellow floaters, Floaters can drive the ball up and down the lines and cut it in if you like

-No players can enter the wing zones

Progression

-Wing zones can now be entered

Coaching Points

-Exploit pockets of space - Are we running in space and dribbling in tight spaces

-Are we making better decision making ?

-Are wingers running the line and using the space ?
