Everton Diamond Passing and Turning Progression (30 mins)

Everton Diamond Passing and Turning Progression

4 players with one ball get in a diamond shape (cones set out 20 yards deep and 12 yards wide) with a player on each cone

The first player passes to one of the wings, receives it back, then passes to the other wing, receives it back and switches the ball to the other side of the diamond.

Players on the wing should think about the cone as a defender and try to make space and receive the ball with the far foot from the passer. Encourage the use of both feet and movement as success increases.

Once the rhythm is there have the players on the edges work a turn as they receive, then work a turn back to where the ball came from and pass it back.

Increased difficulty can be calling out a turn for them to use, reinforcing using the far foot from the defender when dribbling and making sure to create space before receiving the ball with a proper check off. All of the details that have been worked in the turning drills should be applied here as well.

One on one in a circle (30 mins)

One on one in a circle

•The group is spread out into a big circle (likely use 2 circles with bigger groups) with 4 or 5 balls around the circle with the players.

•2 players are in the middle, 1 is given the attacker role and the other is the defender.

•They work for 1 minute against each other and then 2 new players go in.

•The attacker is to go to a ball, ask for it and try to turn the defender. They are not permitted to pass the ball to a player next to the player whom they received the ball from. Each time they can pass to any other player they receive a point, each time the defender wins the ball they receive a point.

•Once everyone has had a turn the players go in again for a second time as the other role of the game.

Coaching points

Proper check offs to create space, shoulder checks when receiving the ball, using your body to protect the ball and feel if you can turn or roll the defender, positive first touch, communication to get the ball and when passing to a teamate. also feel free to work the defensive side of this drill with talking about the angle you approach the attacker, how close you should be, use your body when appropriate etc.

3 vs 3 in the 18 (30 mins)

3 vs 3 in the 18

3 teams of 3 players rotate every 5 minutes with 2 teams in the 18 yard box and the 3rd team spread out around the box as feeders and support players.

One of the teams is on offense, the other on d and the support team plays the ball in and then is used to assist the attack. The attacking team has unlimitted touch and looks to create a goal, if they lose the ball to the defense or out of bounds then they play the defense and switch roles. The team on the outside can shoot with 1 touch as part of the attacking team or can use more touches and simply support the attack.

If a goal is scored your team is rewarded by staying on offense.
