Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

Pairs with a ball.

Instructions:

- Players start 2 yds apart and play one-touch. How many passes can you play in one minute?

- Have each player take one large step back. Continue playing one-touch passes. Etc.

- Combine into groups of 4, 2 yds apart from each other. Play one-touch passes, can't pass back to the player you received from. How many consecutive one-touch passes can your group play?

Coaching Points:

On your toes to receive

Get in line with the ball

Crisp passes

Head up to observe target

Progressions:

Combine into groups of four for passing sequences: Pass and follow; short-short-long; etc.

Technical Development (15 mins)

Organization:

- 4-5 Players

- 1 Ball

- 4 cones to make a box

Instructions:

(A) Pass and follow. Players will pass around the box and follow their pass. Two-touch passing, one to receive, one to pass. Vary direction, L/R foot, surface of foot, etc. (If there are only 4 players in the box the last player must dribble to the next cone before starting the passing sequence again.)

(B) One player will move inside the box to create a 3 v 1 rondo. Passers can move but must stay outside the box. Objective: Possess/retain away from defender. If defender wins the ball, switch with the player who lost it.

Coaching Points:

- Check wide to create a passing lane.

- Open body shape

- Call for the ball

- Receive on back foot

- Two touches

Progressions:

- Combine boxes for 6 v 2 rondo.

Pass and Receive (15 mins)

Organization:

25x25 square. 5yd boxes marked out in each corner. One player in each box (receivers). Two defenders in the middle, remaining players in the middle are attackers, each has a ball.

Instructions:

Attackers in the middle are looking to play a pass to a receiver in one of the corner boxes. The receiver must take his first touch out of the square then leaves to become an attacker; the passer then enters the square to become a receiver. Defenders are trying to kick balls away, defender gets a point each time. Play for one minute then switch defenders.

Four box game (20 mins)

Organization:

25x25 square. 4v4+2. 5yd boxes marked out in each corner.

Instructions:

The objective is to work the ball into a box for a point. Once you have scored in a box you must move to a new box. The game is live the whole time, no stoppages after a score.

(1) You score by dribbling into the box. (This is a more suitable starting point for younger ages.)

(2) P - First touch has to take you out of the box.

Body open to see as much of the field as possible
