Pressing Queues & Triggers (25 mins)

40X35 Yards, 2 small goals in corners of one end.

Play 4v2 in middle zone, back 4 should step to keep attackers from crossline into third zone or drop to prevent the ball over the top into the small goals. If the attackers can dribble over the line they score 1 point, playing the ball into a small goal is 2 points, if the defense can play the ball to the tagets they get 1 point (play for pushups, 3 minute games).

Coaching Points: When to step forward and when to drop deep: Pressure on the ball allows defense to step up, if attacker can get their head up defenders should drop off to cover he ball over the top, Clearing to a target or out of play. Organizing the midfield pressure and when to step into the midfield to pressure or deny possession.

6v6 denying scoring opportunities (35 mins)

3v3 + 3v3 (30x30 Grid) large goals at each end.

- Progression 1: Allow players to exit their zone to support attack, 4v4.

Coaching Points: Attackers should look to pressure earlier to deny penetration into their defensive zone. They should direct ball in a single direction allowing their defenders to maintain their shape. Once ball has been played into defensive zone players should position themselves to receive the ball from the back as quickly and simply as possible to ease the pressure on the back line as well as denying their opponants the ability to releive pressure and swing the ball.

Defenders should pressure quickly to get attackers head down, deny penetration or shooting, second defender should close quickly to deny 1v1 opportunities and look to double team. Covering defender should cover passing lanes between first 2 defenders or balance defense defending switches if keeper has lane covered. Look to get the ball into the attacking zone as quickly as possible and recognize when to possess out of the back and when to simple clear into the attacking zone.

Coaching Points: Staying compact, limiting space between players, supporting all pressure on the ball, awareness - dont get caught ball watching, pivot dropping in to keep compact, backs stepping into second line when neccessary, Defense should be patient till they can win the ball then look to counter attack to small goals, they should use normal shape when bringing the ball out of the back i.e. outside backs wide and high, center backs to the corner of the 18, pivot in the middle or dropping deep between the center backs.
