1v1 Defending Principles

- Mark out 3-4 12x15/10x20 yard grids

- Have plenty of balls ready

- Use coned goals or Pop-up goals and place in the middle of the grid

- Make it competitive by breaking players into 2 teams of 3-4 players. Players MUST KEEP SCORE.

- Timed exercise then change the attackers and defenders around.

1. On 1 Grid R1 starts by playing pass to B1 and R1 defends while B1 attacks the mini-goal. If the defenders were to win the ball they attack to encourage individual transition and game realistic conditions.

- After a while change the teams around a keep a total numbers of goals combined between the teams.

- Punishment for the losing team

Coaching Points:

- Speed of approach (Deny space and time)

- Angle shutdown by forcing him down the side and away from the goal (Deflect by condesning the space and not allowing them inside)

- Move feet quickly

- Eye on the ball

- Hands out - Need to engage - So if player changes direction you can stop their run (right foot forward/right hand out, left fot forward/left hand out.

- Spook (threaten the ball) - make attacker feel uncomfortable

- Low to ground/ Patience (Delay)

- Front foot v back foot

- In flanks you need to encourage agressive defending.

- If ball gets played passed you - get your body across the attacker win the space between defender and ball.
