Don't Get Split (20 mins)

Organization:

-Organize the group into 3 groups of 3 or 4, as this can be done with 4s as well, depending on size.

-Grid size can vary depending where you are training; remember, the smaller the area the more it caters to your defending session, I usually make the area on the end 7x10 yds and the middle area 4x10 yds, but you have to adjust to your players.

-the focus is for the 3 defending players to work together, stay compact and focus on pressure, support/cover, and balance.

-try to force the attackers to play around the 3 defenders, not between them; "don't get split"

-attackers can only play the ball on the ground.

-you can add flank players to help move the ball.

Possible Progression:

-take out the cones and play 6v3 and make the objective for the attackers the same, try to split, and the defenders gain points by intercepting the ball and attempting to maintain possessions and pass to the coach.

Coaching Points:

All defending principles of play:

- Pressure/Delay, Support/Depth, Compactness, Cover/Balance, Control/Restraint, and Surprise.

Win To Go Forward (20 mins)

Organization:

-Use the space you have available and divide it roughly in half.

-put 2 target goals along the centre line for the attacking team to dribble through.

-3v3 inside the grid near centre; attacking team has supporting players on the outside; limit touches of attacking team according to the ability of your players.  attacking team maintains possessions and looks to dribble through gates at centre for a point.  The defending team has unlimited touches.

-The defending team tries to win the ball and play it forward to one of their flank players in the attacking half. Once that pass is made, one of the interior players joins that player, along with one of the opposing players to defend.

-So in essence if the defenders are able to win the ball they transition to attack and play 3 v 2 in the area closest to the goal

Progression:

-defending players must make one pass inside their defending grid before they can advance the ball.

Coaching Points:

All Defending Principles of Play:

-Pressure/Delay, Depth/Support, Compactness, Cover/Balance, Control/Restraint, and Surprise.

Attacking Principles (after the balll is won): Dispersal, Mobility, Pentration, support

SSG - 3 Teams (20 mins)

Organization:

-use the entire working area you have; make 3 equal teams, use 2 goals with GKs if you have them, or 2 small goals in the corners.

-the 3rd team that isn't playing acts as neutral players on the outside to limit stoppages and keep the game flowing, as well as all players are involved.

-focus is on defending, so drive home the defending principles of play when not in possession.

-play times games of 3-4 minutes.

Coaching Points:

All Defending Principles of Play:

-Pressure/Delay, Support/depth, Compactness, Cover/Balance, Control/Restraint, and Surprise.
