Function (20 mins)

Function-

The drill starts with the blue teams GK feeding the ball out to one of the 2 blue CB's (either side). The blue teams objective is to try and dribble through one of the two gates on the half way line (marked by red cones). The red teams objective is to initially defend well as a group, understanding what each teammates role is and upon winning the ball they red team can go to try and score on the blue teams goal.

I will allow the players time to experiement without my influence. At the correct time I would start to coaching the red team starting from the front player. Talk to the lone ST (#9) about cutting off the passing angle from one CB to the other, forcing the CB with the ball to look for his WMF/CMF. Can the defending WMF closest to the ball (#11 in this picture), cut off the option into the blue FB and can the withdrawn ST (#10) cover the passing option into the blue CMF's. The opposite defending WMF (#7) should tuck in and the 2 defending CMF's (#4 & #8) can squeeze up restricting space for the blues.

Discuss the key defensive principals:

- Pressure on the ball (when, how, where, who)

- Communication (vital in this drill)

- Angles and distances of support

- Compact and narrow shape (if the ball is on the left, the right midfielder should tuck in a sacifice the weak side)

- Tracking runners

- Decision-making

SSG

SSG: 9v9

Red team setup in a 1-4-2-3-1 (leaving out the LB & RB creating a 1-2-2-3-1)

Blue team setup in a 1-4-4-2 (leaving out the LWF & RWM creating a 1-4-2-2)

I will condition the blue team, asking them to play out from the back as often as possible. This will allow the red team plenty of opportunities to work on the defending from the front they practiced in the function. I will focus on coaching the two red CB's (#5 and #4) asking them to squeeze high up the field allowing the #6 and #8 to apply pressure on the opposition CM's.

Exact details to the red team as was in the function

#9 arcing the run, with support from wide midfielders and #10 as the withdrawn ST

Upon winning the ball back I hope the red team can get a shot at goal in the 8 second time allowance
