Description

Have kept the session around ball work and combination play, trying to put the players under pressure all the time working at a high intensity with everything opposed. Easiest way to ensure intensity is to have everything set up so you can move straight from one to the other without long breaks in between. Have only planned for an hour to allow time for a game at the end to finish the session, times might be slightly out if players arent getting the 1st part don't move n until they have got it right. If there is any keepers they can participate in the session but can use their hands to receive the ball as well as their feet.

possession circle/arrival activity (10 mins)

Normally start a training session with the above, looks really simple but gets players involved straight away, particulalrly good with new players to feel part of the group has a good social aspect to it, means they get to learn names quickly and as the playaers have no choice who they go into the middle with they have to work with whoever they go in with. No set area size depends really on the number of players, players will try and cheat and make the area bigger to buy themsleves more time in possession.

Players on the outside keep the ball from the middle players. 2 players in the middle try to win the ball. If an outside player gives the ball away they go into the middle with the man on their right.

Depending on ability level of players limit number of touches on the outside, usually do 1 touch but might need to start with 2/3 touch.

4v4 target game (20 mins)

SETUP:

Area size dependant on number of players 30x40 as a guide each corner box 5 yards square.

4v4 with a target player in each corner. 2 teams play against each other in middle, to score have to pass to a target player, Target player switches play before restarting from the other corner when a team scores they keep possession. Switch target players after 5mins. Depending on numbers can also put a support player on each side of the area, inside players can play a one:two with an outside player

PROGRESSION(S):

If players are finding practice too easy

- can limit the touches in the middle 1/2 touch

- players in the middle must have 5 passes before playing into a target player

- every player on a team must tocuch the ball before playing into a target player

COACHING POINTS:

Recognise opportunities to play into target player - encourage players to play longer passes when opportunities arise

Receive the ball half turned opening up as much of the area of possible.

Try and always come off at an angle to receive don't make straight runs and stand still

Movement to create opportunities for teammates to receive, runs to influence the defender off the ball not always runs to receive

Understanding of when to play a killer ball into the target players and when to keep safe possession

6v6 combination play with end zone (30 mins)

SETUP:

Use same area as previous screen, keep areas tight to force players to play quickly under pressure. Each end zone full width of area and 5 yards out

6v6(depending on numbers can do with 7v7, 8v8 etc) with mini goals within an end zone at either end. Practice always starts with coach playing ball into the attacking team in end zone, play is switched within end zone before going forward into area to try and score at the opposite end. Must be inside end zone before passing through the mini goals.

PROGRESSION(S):

COACHING POINTS:

Pass choice when playing forward - don't force the play

Positive possession 1st thought is can we play forward

Movement off the ball to receive - influence defender with runs

Make the pitch as big as possible, high and wide

Supporting distance and angles both in front of and behind the ball. When do we support in front and when do we support from behind

Be in a position to receive don't hide, work hard to make time and space to receive
