2v2 Combat (15 mins)

Setup

*soccer goals are setup 20 yards apart from eachother

* in between the 2 goals, coach stands with all the soccer balls, while red team stands 5 yards away from the coach

*directly across from the coach 25 yards away stands the yellow team in 2 lines

*to the right & left of the yellow team 5 yards away are 5x5 boxes

* the shooting line is 8 yards away from the soccer goals

Field size is 25x20

Instructions

1) Coach passes a ball to the one of the players on the yellow team (2v2)

2) Red cannot move until a yellow player has made a pass from where they receive the ball via the coach

3) Yellow will attempt to score a goal in either of the two soccer goals

4) If red wins the ball they will attempt to stop the ball in a square on either side of the opposing teams area, indicated by red cones

4) Players return back to original lines after each round, switch lines every 5 minutes

Progression

* making smaller squares for the defending team to score in

* yellow team must make two passes before they can score

* giving passes in the air or bounces to the attacking team (yellow)

* using only one goal for the yellow to score on and/red's as well

Simplification

* allowing reds to only be in correct position to win the ball but not allowed to "poke" to win the ball

*making the goals closer towards eachother (15 yards away)

*giving the ball to the attacker, no pass from the coach

*no outside lines, giving the players more opportunity to dribble & possibly score

Coaching Points

* Good first touch to set an make an opening pass

* Attacking with speed

* Keeping the ball close to the feet

* Feint or "move" to beat the defender

* moving into open space as an attacker when a pass is made in an attempt to score

Dribbling (15 mins)

Setup

* soccer ball for each player

* 25 yard line (either with cones or a field line) for the other side of the grid

Instructions

1) Each player begins with a ball at their feet on the touchline with a partner standing 5 feet from them

2) players will dribble their ball to the right making 5-7 touches before switching and dribbling to the left, and alternating accordingly

3) While the player is dribbling the defender is "Jockeying" and NOT trying to win the ball, just moving in proper positions until the player with the ball has decided to turn (remember angling an approach to defending 1v1)

3) players will stop once they reach the 25 yard mark on the other side and repeat, partners will switch roles once attacking player has gone to the other side and back with the ball

4) there are no "outs" or sidelines, giving the idea of "freedom" - allowing players to operate how they feel most comfortable : do not tell the players this, allow them to discover it

5) After 4 rounds of dribbling - switch the movements so that after 5-7 touches players must do a "step-over", roll, use outside of the foot to turn, pull back's, etc

6) Make sure children are taking WIDE touches to the outside (left & right) when dribbling

7) Teach a maximum of 4 moves (stepovers, pull backs, outside of foot, etc.) - if progressions are required

Progression

* having the defender "poke" the ball to agitate the attacker and make it more difficult to keep control of the ball

Coaching Points

* keeping the ball close to their feet

* getting quick touches on the ball

* change of pace once they alternate direction

* keeping their head up as they dribble the ball

* Defending is moving accordingly and forcing the ball in the direction the attacker is dribbling

* Defender keeps their eye on the ball and not on the player
