Playing at Speed Through Traffic (15 minutes)

Set Up

Put various obstacles such as traffic cones, hurdles and ladders in the middle section. 1 ball between each team. A 'chaos' game

Instructions

The aim is to pass the ball by hand amongst the team. Upon the coaches call, the player with the ball must place it on the ground. Simultaneously, each team will run via the obstacles in the middle area to the opposite end, avoiding contact with each other.

The team who reaches the opposite area in the fastest time scores a point. Repeat.

Progression

Ball must now be played on the floor - 1 or 2 touches

Playing at Speed Passing (20 mins)

Playing at Speed Passing (20 minutes)

Set Up

In between the 2 mini goals place 2 cones, 10 yards apart. 2 players stand at each cone and play will start with them. In the final third, towards the main goal, start with 1 attacker and 1 defender. On the outside of the area (or the wings) have 2 defenders on each side numbered 1 – 4.

Instructions

Play starts with 1 ball at the feet of a player stood by a cone. He passes to his teammate on the opposite cone who takes a touch and plays into the striker. Both players from the cones join their teammate to make it a 3v1 situation. On the coach's call, 1 defender can join in to make a 3v2. For example if the coach shouts 3, then number 3 joins in. The aim is for the attackers to score. 1 Full Size goal at one end complete with GK. At the opposite end have a mini goal/target in each corner. If the defenders win the ball, they can score in the 2 mini goals or pass to the coach who stands between the 2.

Progression

Add more players making it an initial 4v1, then 2 defenders to make 4v3.

Coaching Points:

Use of overloads.

Tempo of play.

Disguise passing/intention.

Communication. Support runs—don’t run in straight lines.
