Warm Up (10 mins)

Set Up -

Mark out a field with cones, eg 25x25 yards

Divide players into pairs (one ball per pair)

Sequence -

Pairs do the following exercises:

-Players juggle anyway they want

-Players juggle as directed (small circle, large circle etc) then pass to their partners

-One player juggles while the other runs two laps of the field as directed (high knees, heel kicks etc) then shows for the ball. The player in the field passes and the two players switch roles and positions

Double Team Face to Face (20 mins)

Main Session

Set Up:

-Set up one goal with Goalkeeper

-Two defenders stand 25 yards in front of Goal

One attacker (with the ball) stands 35 yards infront of the goal

-The remaining attackers and defenders wait outside field of play

Sequence:

-The attacker tries to get past the defender and finish

-The defender tries to stop them

Basic Principle:

When defenders outnumber attackers they should always focus on winning the ball

From 1v1 to 2v1 (20 mins)

Set Up:

-Set up one goal with Goalkeeper

-A passer (with ball) stands infront of the goal

-One attacker stands on each wing

-Place two cones infront of the passer with a defender on each one

Sequence:

-The passer passes to A

-A receives the ball and tries to score

-B tries to stop A and win the ball at first, and then, with the help of C

-When the passer passes C starts moving towards B

-B and C double team A

Tips for Defenders:

Defenders have two ways to stop the attacker. Both options are valid; the coach must decide which one is preferable. As a general rule, recommend that the players close to the goal force the attackers outside; players further away should force them inside and double team them face to face.

Option 1 - Open the Wing (20 mins)

Advamtage:

Attacker cannot threaten the goal directly from the wing

Disadvantage:

Defenders cannot double team properly; attackers who win the 1v1 are instantly behind defenders

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Option 2 - Close the wing

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Option 2 - Close the wing

Option 2 - Close the wing (20 mins)

Advantage:

Defenders create a clear 2v1 situation and can win the ball

Disadvantage:

Attacker dribbles into a dangerous position (possibly with their strong foot) and can shoot if C fails to stay close enough

Three Zone Game:

Set Up:

-Divide players into two teams (A and B)

-Divide the field into two outside zones (20 yards each) and one middle zone (10 yards)

Sequence:

-A plays against B

-If the attackers attack on one wing, all defenders must leave the other wing otherwise the attacking team scores a point
