Screen 1 (20 mins)

Organization: Warm up, all players

Instructions: Phase 1: Isometric activation to Dynamic activation stretches as group in a circle.

Phase 2: Perform Rhythmic activation movements at cone station 1, 2, 3.

1=small two/one foot hops. 2=quick shuffle. 3=quick feet movements.  All stations require 80% sprint to end cone.

Phase 3: Diamond Passing Pattern

Team of 5 players, in diamond shape, about 10 yards apart

Have one player start in middle of group

Rules are simple-1. Pass either left or right then run opposite direction

of pass. 2. When ball is at player directly across from you, you must

take that players place.

Coaching Points: We perform our stretches and warm ups specifically to target each joint and each range of motion technique to prepare for soccer specific movements and patterns. We begin in a static position then blend into purposeful movement patterns then into a soccer specific movement. This is intended to not only prepare the body to play at a high level but, hopefully, reduce the risk of injury.

Organization: Set up a 30 x 30 field appropriate to your numbers. Have a 5 yard cone goal at each end of field. Place another single cone directly in the middle of the field dividing it into two equal sizes. Play 3 v 3 to 6 v 6 depending on your numbers and can play +1 neutral on field if needed. Each cone goal will need a neutral player (shown in yellow).

Instructions: The objective to have the team in possession play the ball to other neutral and transition into the other half while keeping possession. In order to play to the other neutral, the team in possession must first make 3 passes, at a minimum, on that half of the field. The neutral that is on that half is available to use as an option to complete those 3 passes. The neutral players can not be tackled but can be pressured. Defending team must win the ball back and complete 3 passes before transitioning to the other half. Teams get a point for each time they are able to get the ball to the other side. First team to 10 wins

Coaching Points: The exercise is designed to create a very pressurized situation and show, with a few quick interchanges, that we can play away from that pressure and play into space.

There is two situations here, 1) is in possession trying to complete the 3 passes and 2) when transitioning to the other half.

For situation 1: When under pressure, look to play into the given space with either a skillful dribble or diagonal pass. It is very important to exploit the space with bi-directional, off the ball runs. Take the defender out of the play and then provide option to the player with the ball. Must have a positive first touch in order to have a positive second touch. Play quick and be elusive.

For situation 2: As you transition, you should be quick and precise with your run. Again, the run should be bi-directional and into an area where you can maintain possession. Open your body toward the field to see your options and the defense positions.

When defending: Work to recover possession, press to force a turnover.

Organization: Set up a 40 x 30 field with two goals at each end. Place a 10 yard wide neutral in the middle of the field. Play 5 x 5 up to 7 v 7 based on numbers. Place keeper in each goal.

Instructions: As in the previous exercise, the defending team must have 3 passes on their own half before transitioning forward. No players are allowed in the neutral zone until their team has completed the 3 passes. Once the team in possession has done so, the waiting attackers are allowed to come into the zone to receive a pass while the defenders stay on their own half. The receiving player must take a positive touch forward and begin the attack. The defending player that makes the pass to the waiting attacker is allowed to come into the attacking half to help score. When possession in lost and the defending team goes on the attack, three players must always stay on the attacking half at all times. These players should rotate on every transition. To add, one of the players that was attacking, and has lost possession, must now make a near post recovery run to help defend in their won half. Above shows that the white team had possession, the blue defender intercepted the pass, played it to the keeper, to another blue def, to another blue def, then an outlet pass. Once the 3rd pass was made on the defensive half, the blue attacker came into the neutral zone, received the ball and that passing blue defender joined in the attack, at the same time, one white attacker is now making a recovery run to the near post to help defend. It should always be 4 v 3+1. there are no limitations on number passes that have to be made in the offensive half.

Coaching Points: When in possesion, ask: Can I score? Can someone else score? Can we keep possession? All movements must be quick and precise with a desire to score. Quickly check in to the neutral zone and have a good first touch. Attack with a high desire to score. Defend with high pressure to cause mistakes and force turnovers. The recovery runs should be to the near post and at full sprint in order to aid in defense.
