Juggling / Pop challenge (10 mins)

Instructions:

1. Allow players to practice juggling.

2. Coach demonstrates which surface he/she would like the players to use (laces) and allows players to practice by bouncing the ball on the ground first and trying to pop the ball back up to his/her hands.

3. If this becomes to easy for the players then ask them to pop the ball before it touches the ground.

Progression:

(P1) - Pop Challenge: Players must pop the ball back up to their hands using their laces, and have to control the ball so that it doesn't go higher than their heads.

1. For the challenge the players must pop the ball up to their hands with his/her right foot, then catch it, afterwards pop the ball with their left foot and catch it (level 1).

2. After completing level 1, players must then pop the ball twice on each leg, catching it, and then finish by alternating the legs, so that the ball pops on the right and then the left.

3. If the ball is dropped, player starts back at level zero.

4. Players try to beat their latest level, or his/her peer's level.

Example: (Level 1) Right foot - pop - catch, Left foot - pop - catch; (Level 2) Right foot - 2x pop - catch, Left foot - 2x pop - catch, Right + Left foot - 1 pop in between each - catch; etc.

Free Movement (10 mins)

Organization:

20 x 15

Every player with a ball

Instructions:

1. In the 20 x 15 grid allow the players to dribble around using Messi / Ronaldo touches.

2. (Coach) Reviews Messi and Ronaldo touches and addresses when and where to use each touch. Introduces inside/outside touches.

3. Allow the players to practice.

Coaching Points:

1. Keep you head up - Look out for other players who may bump into you. Look for open space and cut away from others with the outside surface of your foot.

2. Recognize when to use Messi vs. Ronaldo touches while performing the move. (Before/After?)

3. Maintain a low center of gravity

4.Touch after recognizing there's space - needs to be explosive but controlled into space away from players reach.

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 lives; Each players has 5 lives to start of with, if they dribble out of bounds or by accidentally bumps into another player he/she loses a life. If a player gets down to zero lives left he/she must see a coach for a technical challenge that will give them an additional 5 lives. After 2 minutes see who many lives each player has left.

Turning (Pressure in front - Unopposed) (20 mins)

Organization:

15 x 15 grid with a 5 x 5 box in the center (as shown)

3 players minimum on each outside cone

1 Ball per group

Instructions:

1. (Coach) Introduces ____ turn/move.

2. The first player in each line dribbles, using Messi touches, out to the center box which is divided into four triangles.

3. Once they reach the center cone he/she must perform the move/turn the coach has just demonstrated.

4. (P1) - add in passive defender, to encourage players to check their shoulders before turning.

Coaching Points:

1. Vision - Keep your head up. (1) Be aware of space and pressure (2) Check your shoulder to see if there's space behind.

2. Change in speed and direction, using the cuts and turns demonstrated in practice. (Inside/Outside)

3. Body shape - Keep a low center of gravity to (1) shield the other players from stealing the ball (2) quick explosions away from pressure

4. Body positioning - where is the ball in relation to pressure; Near or far foot?

Progressions:

(P1) - While one player dribbles with the ball towards the center triangle a second player will act as a passive defender shadowing the first. The focus is encourage players to look behind them before they turn. If players become comfortable with this the defender may become active. (--> Attacking player becomes the next passive defender; Defender becomes next attacker)

Triangle tag (20 mins)

Organization:

5 yd x 5 yd triangle

2 players per triangle

Part 1: No balls; Part 2: Include balls, one for each player

Instructions:

1. One v. One tag. Yellow player starts out as the tagger.

2. Yellow player must try to tag the blue player before time is up.

3. If blue player becomes tagged, then he/she will try to tag the yellow player.

4. If the blue player loses control of the ball and has to chase after it, he/she becomes the tagger.

5. 2 minute games: Each game is worth one point. If your not it at the end of the game you've earned a point. If you are it at the end of the time, players it must do 3 (Fluffy start jumps).

Coaching Points:

1. Vision - Keep your head up. (1) Be aware of space and pressure (2) Check your shoulder to see if there's space behind (3) Notice if the tagger changes direction.

2. Change in speed and direction, using the cuts and turns demonstrated in practice.

3. Dribbling technique: Messi touches - tight cuts to get around the corners and keep the ball under control.
