MDG - Defending with a Back 4 (10 mins)

MDG

Organisation

Create a grid 60 v 30 yards, split into 2 equal areas.

Split players into 3 teams of 4. 2 teams are placed in defending positions within the area - each defending a single goal. The third team is placed on the half way line - they will commence as attackers initially

Aim

Play begins with the middle team who look to attack one of the goals.

As they attack, the defending team seek to defend as a unit, pressing as necessary and sliding and screening.

If the attacking team score a goal, or are otherwise dispossessed, they switch places with the defending team and become defenders themselves. The team that were defending now become the attackers and seek to attack the opposite goal. The situation is then repeated if they score or are dispossessed.

Progressions

1. To encourage quicker attacking, limit the number of passes by the attacking team to only 6 or restrict the time they can be in possession of the ball to 10 seconds.

Coaching Points For Defence

Defence to remain compact - close down passing lines. Need to check over shoulder.

Communication is key. If an attacker player moves sideways, the pressing defender needs to decide if the pressing defender goes with him or if he passes the player onto another Defender to press - more zonal defence rather than man-to-man?

First Defender to press, Second Defender to Support. Third and Fourth Defenders. See above (dog leg).

Defence to shuffle over if ball is passed wide, moving as a Unit.

Organisation

Create a grid 60 v 30 yards, split into 2 equal areas.

Split players into 3 teams of 6. When defending - 4 defenders together with No.6 & 8 When in attack - 2-3-1. 2 teams are placed in defending positions within the area - each defending a single goal. The third team is placed on the half way line - they will commence as attackers initially (the black team).

Offside applies.

Coaching Points For Defence when Defending

Achieve as high a line as possible to defend with to begin.

Dog leg?

Defence to shuffle over if ball is passed wide, moving as a Unit.

No.s 6 & 8 to play in front of the Back 4 and protect Zone 14, dropping into the defensive line if necessary until a defender has recovered if out of position.

Coaching Points for Defence When Attacking

Regain shape! Don't rush - pass the ball with purpose - a chance to regain shape and advance.

2 & 3 High & Wide

4 & 5 move apart

6 slightly more defensive than 8

8 should be the most advanced player.

Try to play out to 6 or 8 - 8 is the play maker. Otherwise, 2 or 3.
