Warm-Up: Run Around the Castle (10 mins)

Focus: Physical literacy

Instructions: Players make a line behind the facilitator. They will follow the facilitator around the parameter of the field in various movements.

Variations: Walking (forwards and backwards), running, skipping, knees up, jumping (i.e., kangaroo or bunny), hop (i.e., frog), rolling, bear crawl, lunges, shuffling, tippy toes, etc.

Coaching Points: Listening, following instruction, physical literacy, having fun, and being positive!

Additional Notes: If you think of more movements, please feel free to do them. Try to be creative!

Week 1: Catch the Tail (10 mins)

Focus: Movement and Coordination

Instructions: Team A gets tails. Team B has no tails. Begin this game without balls. Team B tries to catch the tail from Team A. Halfway through you switch. When a tail is pulled, the tail is put back on. Please remember, there are NO ELIMINATIONS!

Progression: Only 2 people are without tails, as well as without a ball. Every other child has a ball and a tail. Two people without a tail chase the other players and try to catch their tails.

Coaching Points: Have control of the ball, head up, have fun, let them play, allow for creativity, always make sure that the players get put back in the game quickly if there tail is caught, encourage, and be positive!

Additional Notes: Remind parents of the importance of parental involvement for the whole program!

Week 2: Clean Up the Garden (10 mins)

Focus: Movement and Coordination

Instructions: Split the grid up into thirds. Team A is on one end and Team B is on the other. The center is no-man’s land (“the garden”). No one is allowed in “the garden”. Each player gets a ball and is in the ready position on their end line. Parents are to be surrounding the grid to ensure that the balls remain inside at all times.

Objective: Get rid of your ball and pass it to the other teams side. Start off with throwing and then progress to a light pass (kicking).

Coaching Points: Light throws and light passes (safety first), heads up, have fun, and lots of movement.

Week 3: Freeze Tag (10 mins)

Focus: Dribbling

Instructions: Each player with a ball. 2 players are without a ball. Facilitator allows players to express themselves, while encouraging lots of touches. Remind the players to stay within the grid. If a player is tagged, they pick up their ball and hold it above their head and stand with their legs apart. Players who are still dribbling have to free a player by passing the ball through their legs and collect the ball on the opposite side and continue dribbling.

Coaching Points: Close control, lots of touches, shielding the ball from opposing players, change of pace, change of direction.

Week 4: Follow the Leader (10 mins)

Focus: Dribbling

Instructions: Each child partners with a parent or another player and finds space inside the grid. Start without a ball and have them walking. Child follows parents or his/her partner. As facilitator shouts change they quickly switch roles.

Variations without Ball: As above but running, skipping, hopping 1 foot, bunny hopping (2 feet), giant steps, backwards, etc.).

Progression: Add in a ball. Player in front has the ball. Player behind follows. When facilitator shouts switch, players pass it to each other.

Variations with Ball: Stop, walk, fast, crash, toe taps (even the people without the ball as it teaches the movements, etc.).

Coaching Points: Movement and turning, keep head up, listening, following instruction, and have fun!

Week 5: Shark Tank (10 mins)

Focus: Control of the Ball

Instructions: Facilitator will be the shark. Every player has a ball and is standing in the grid. The players are the fish/minnows. Facilitators have to try to get their ball and kick it out of the grid. Players retrieve their ball and enter the game again.

Progression: (1) 1 or 2 players become the shark and they do not have a ball. (2) When the ball is kicked out, the player becomes a shark until there is one player left with a ball. (3) If the ball is kicked out, have the player practice a skill before they come back in (i.e., toe taps, bells, etc.).

Coaching Points: Kick the ball away, heads up, try to run away from the facilitator, protect your ball, and remind players not to kick each other.

Week 6: Thieves (10 mins)

Focus: Control of Ball

Instructions: 2 pugs nets on the same end line with a gap in the middle. Facilitator starts with all the balls in the middle of the nets. Team A on one side of the facilitator and Team B on the other side. Have players stand in a line. Coach plays the ball into the field. Players run out and first player to get the ball tries to gain possession and score on one of the goals.

Progression: Have the players be in different positions (i.e., sitting, facing backwards, lay on ground on stomach, lay on ground on back, etc.).

Coaching Points: Dribbling (close control), use both feet, head up, run fast to ball, and change of pace.
