2 v 1 + 1 (20 mins)

Small Sided 2 v 1 + 1

- Channels set up as shown 10 X 20

- 1 defender on middle line, 1 defender on back line, 2 attackers at top line with 1 ball

Instructions:

- Player A passes to player B to start activity. Defender 1 is now active to defend

- Player B controls and plays 2 v 1 with player A to try to advance past defender using pass or dribble

- If player B or player A get across middle line, then player 2 can defend. Player 1 is now not able to defend

- Defender 2 is not allowed to leave back line until ball enters the zone.

- Attackers try to advance ball again across back line to score a point.

- If defenders get possession of ball, they attack opposite direction 2 v 2 to try and gain point by crossing top line under control

- Repeat activity with same attackers and defenders. Switch roles after 1 min

Coaching Points

Technical

- Quality reception of ball from pass to allow player to pick head up and assess defenders position

- Correct weight and direction of pass to beat defender or retain possession

- Moves executed at speed to beat defender

Tactical

- Defender's position determines the decision on the ball. Dribble if space available, pass if defender cuts off space in front, perform move to beat defender if space available to do so

- Angle of support needs to be appropriate to receive ball from teammate and open space.

- Type of dribble needs to be apprpriate to defender's position relative to the ball and space available.

Physical

- Accelerate with the ball at speed to take as much space as possible

- Quick feet and agility to make decisions as defender closes space

- Strength to hold off defender if needed to protect ball and retain possession

Psychsocial

- Communication to give teammate info as to whether to pass or dribble

- Confidence to beat defender if their body position allows for it

- Make appropriate decision based on situation

- Cooperate to achieve the goal of scoring/ defending

Progressions/Regressions

R - Only 1 defender instead of 2 to beat

R - Defenders only allowed to walk to defend

P - Allow defender 2 off the line as well when activity starts

P - Decrease distance from defender 1 to player B to start

4 v 2 - 2 v 4 (20 mins)

4 v 2 to 2 v 4

Directions:

- Blue team has possession, white team send two defenders into zone.

- If blue team can get 4 passes, then they can "break" pressure and advance into second zone, sending two attackers. The white defenders can recover to make it a 2 v 4. If blue get across blue line, they get 2 points.

- If white win the ball, they try to drive across red line for 1 point or play the ball to their teammate in their defensive zone and switch roles with blue.

Decision Making Corridor (20 mins)

Decision Making Corridor (Modification)

Description: (5 v 5 - 7 v 7)

- 3 Zones as marked

- Attacking team (blue) tries to play forward to eventually dribble through one of the three gates on the far side

- Defending team is only allowed to defend their zone and cannot leave the back line of their zone until the ball enters the zone

- Attacking players are able to move anywhere within their own zone

- Attacking team can send 1 extra player into an advanced zone when the ball crosses into the zone

- Defending team counters on the other team through the other gates when winning the ball (no restriction to space when ball transfers possession)

- If ball goes out, restarts in first zone and attacking team tries to attack again

- Switch roles after a few minutes, adding score all along

Progressions:

- Allow defenders to leave the line, but must stay in their zone

- Allow attackers to dribble across zones

- Allow attackers to move backwards a zone to create even more overload

- Remove zonal restrictions to defending team, but not attacking team

Coaching Points:

Attack

- Movement off the ball to create opportunities to move the ball forward

- Patient play to find the right opportunity to penetrate into the next zone

- Quick ball movement to find the late run coming from the extra attacker joining the zone

- Creative ball movement to get into the attacking zone

Defense

- Discipline to not allow the ball to move forward

- Communication with the advanced zone to assist them in defending their area

- Effective pressure/cover to limit the attacks ability to penetrate

- Explosive counter attack when ball is won to get it forward

- Strong challenges to make attackers heads go down.

7 v 6 Defending from the front

Field size 50 x 70

Directions:

- Blue team looks to build out of the back and eventually move the ball forward to the counter goals

- White team looks to pressure the ball and win it in the attacking third of middle third.

- Restriction to white is they can only send one extra defender into any zone to help defend.

- Blue are restricted to their zone, until they move the ball forward, then they can move forward as a group.
