Warm-Up (15 mins)

Organization:

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 25x25 pitch (or adapt for age/ability)

-2 teams of roughly equal numbers. Team 1 has a ball for the whole team. Team 2 – every player has a ball each. Team 1 has to pass their ball from teammate to teammate and move around the area.

Team 2 dribble their balls and move around the area trying to intercept the passing/cause interference to Team 1.

Variations/Progressions:

-Move passing team (Team 1) to the outside of the area. Team 1 now play their passes through the area. 1 player from Team 1 from can now step in from outside the area to receive the ball before playing the ball back out or turning to the outside again. Successful completion of that task results in 1 point.

Coaching Points:

-create space by spreading out, move into space where teammate can pass to you, good first touch to set up a dribble, pass, shot, have patience to create a scoring chance, good communication with other players, combinations of passing/movement

1v1 to 4v1 Overload (15 mins)

Organization:

-See diagram for set-up

-Area approx. 15x20 yards (adapt for age/numbers/ability)

-Coach plays ball in to one player who attacks opponent in a 1v1 situation

-If player scores they add another player, and the other team quickly change defenders, and that defender quickly becomes the goalkeeper - now 2v1 situation

-This pattern can potentially continue until team scores at 4v1

-If defending team win it back they begin the pattern over

-If ball it goes out coach can either roll one in or have players go back and restart at 1v1

-Give bonus points for using practiced moves

Coaching Points:

(individual) close control, acceleration, moves, balance, speed, head-up/awareness, dribbling skills, change of pace, good finishing

(group) movement to create space, support, quick passing

SSG (15 mins)

Organization:

-area approx. 20x30 yards (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

-4v4 small-sided game

-1 team attacks 2 mini-nets,1 team attacks big goal (with GK). Both teams can use support player.

Coaching Points:

-close dribbling in tight areas

-accelerate/rwb into open spaces

-get head up to scan for space, goal, defender

-use of both feet and all surfaces of feet

-quick decision-making - use speed or 1v1 skill, pass or dribble?

-accurate finishing
