Overlap

Play begins with the center mid who pass backwards to right defender. The right defender pass wide to right mid and makes an overlapping run. The right mid dribbles inside to draw the defender and then passes down the line to overlapping defender. The center mid calls out his run and the the right mid takes up a supporting position at the top of the box - and the defender can play either passing option.

ROTATION : (1-2-3) Center mid rotates to right defender / right defender rotates to right mid / right mid rotates to center mid.

COACHING POINTS :

(1) Timing & Communication - the defender should tell the mid to hold it as he is overlapping and then also call when the timing is right for the pass

(2) The wide mid should show disguise on the ball and try to commit the defender with the dribble.

(3) The wide mid has to read the movement of the defender and choose whether to pass or dribble.

(4) Supporting position of the wide mid is important not only for additional passing option but also so that if we lose the ball , he then can defend while the overlapping defender recovers.
