Receiving to play Forward - Technical (15 mins)

Organisation:

-As seen in diagram; playing area approx 20x30 yards depending on size of players, ability and area.

-6 cones that represent defenders spaced out in the area as shown.

-Play starts at A and B; Players pass in the arrowed direction and follow their pass. Players on the cones start touch-tight and check off to receive on the BACK foot. They then quickly pass in the arrowed direction, following their pass.

-Passes need to be made to the outside of the cones (which represents a defender).

-Try to have 3 balls moving at all times (start with 2)

Progression:

1) Teach players to scan forward prior to receiving a pass.

2) At A and B players can play a 1-2/wall pass with the receiver who then plays to the next player.

3) Players on the cones choose to receive off the back foot/front foot, infront or behind the cone.

Coaching Points:

-Weight of pass.

-Checking off the cone with proper timing.

-Receive on the half turn on the back foot.

-Scanning.

3 zone game (15 mins)

Organization:

Construct two 15 x 8 grids separated by a 20 x 4 channel. 4 players within each area, with the team in the middle channel designated as the defenders..(adjust your numbers accordingly if need be)

-The coach passes the ball to blue who attempt to keep possession and make a pre-determined number of passes(5) and then pass to green while trying to keep the ball away from the blue defenders; If successful they receive a point and blue remain as the pressuring defenders.

-If the red defenders wins possession or break up play, or the remaining red players intercept in the central channel they switch areas with blue. Coach plays the next pass to green and blue pressure, etc.

Possible Progressions (if necessary):

-increase number of passes the attacking team must make

-condition touch limits.. 2 touch

4 v 3..

Coaching Points:

-Technical key factors- passing and receiving

-Attacking principles of play

North/South-East/West Game (20 mins)

Organisation:

-As shown, size of playing area dependant on numbers,

-Blues try to pass across the field and link up with targer player, who then passes into a teammate and they continue to go side-to-side.

-Must go from one side to the other, uninterrupted, in order to score.

-play for 3-4 min then switch internal players with target players.

Progression:

-Once they have played into a target player he then plays into the grid and joins the attack. The original passer takes his place as the target player. If the attacking team can now pass uniterupted to the player on the opposite side, they get a point. If reds intercept/tackle they then try to pass into their target players.

Coaching points:

-Weight of pass

-Receive on the half turn if possible

-Scan forward (prior to receiving and passing)

-Play quickly where possible

SSG (15 mins)

Organization:

-set up a small sided game in a field area that is relative to the number of players you have available.

-divide the field into 3 separate zones (the middle zone being the biggest), and place players from each team in each zone as follows: GK and 2 defenders in the defending third, 4 in the middle third, and 1 in the attacking third; you can adjust numbers depending on players available.

-players can only advance the ball by passing it onto the next third, they can also go backwards, but players cannot move between thirds initially.

-players can strike from any third, but encourage players to pass the ball forward, and for those players receiving the ball to look to turn away from pressure or receive in a position to go forward/shoot

Progression:

-players can now move forward to over-load a zone; ie. a defender can move to the middle third when attacking and the ball is passed in, or a player can move into the attacking third when the ball is passed in.

*players cannot move into a zone to defend or by dribbling the ball in.

Coaching Points:

-patience in possession

-look to turn and change the point of attack

-supporting movements off of the ball.

-Attacking Principles of Play: dispersal, mobility/interchange, support, penetration.
